Maradona made the name
I believe the Argentina national team is held to high standards and those standards put a lot of pressure on the players. But people fail to realize that if it wasnt for Maradona where would Argentina be in the soccer world today. Ever since Maradona argentina has produced world class players time after time. All of the top clubs in the world I bet you can name AT LEAST 1 argentinian player.
And now Argentina is always considered as a team to beat for example last world cup we were the favorites but disappointed many. Now the team is filled with young blood and has a realistic shot at putting its name on WORLD CUP 06. But can they do it without a Maradona is the big question? Argentinian soccer is at the top of its game team wise but individually i do not think there will ever be another Maradona in Argentina nor any other country for that matter.
The reason I believe Maradona is a better player than PELE is because Diego left his home country and won everywhere he went. Pele never went to play in the european leagues. I am not taking anything away from pele but theres a big difference playing european teams only in club championships than taking a BEATING week in and week out in the toughest leagues in the world. Maradona made Napoli. Before Maradona napoli was nothing and after Maradona napoli is yet again just another team. But with maradona they won everything and he is considered a God over in Napoli. I had the chance to visit and wow if you mention Maradonas name in any kind of negative way you will definately get a nice shiner at least haha.

Times were different when Pelé was playing. It was not normal for a man to leave his coutry or his beloved local club to gain more money. When he got transfered to US Cosmos he was already at the end of his career.
You should not compare him (and all his achievements) to Maradona. Shame on you! Another thing: here in Brazil we usually consider the man outside the field also, so let´s not forget that he is a jerk for doing a goal with his hand at a World Cup and a really bad example for using cocaine.
Anyway, read what the world press has to say about these 2 talented players… I may be retarded but you can’t argue with the spetialists. Maradona made the name, but I’m not sure it was a good one.

The point is he still did not leave his country and conquer the soccer world. Maradona won EVERYWHERE. You couldve gave Maradona 10 “shoemakers” and he would have won. Pele wasnt even the best player on the brazilian national team in my opinion; Rivelino was the king but pele scored the cheesy goals
I know you really shouldnt compare the two because it is not even close. Pele played against no competition. Watch any of peles videos defenders were soft. I wanna see pele play when the other team is beating the shit out of you.
The world press wants to be politically correct thats why they talk so highly about pele. Maradona is ghetto bcuz thats how he was raised hes not gonna change for anyone. but on the field he is the BEST player to ever set foot on grass. OOO and by the way cocaine doesnt give you talent. Just because Pele is fake and acts like a “lawyer” when his own son is a druggie and Maradona holds it down for the average guy WHO IS BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE. Consider yourself LUCKY you got to see Maradona in your lifetime because there will never be another like him.
Pele is like the Larry Bird of the NBA- GREAT but not better than JORDAN- Maradona.
Does that make brazilians mad that the best player that ever lived is from Argentina so they have to talk about his life off the field like it matters. Were talking about the game of soccer in between the lines where the grass is.

Maradona is really great. He really is.

I had the chance of seeing Maradona played once in Napoli and the gay was just incredible. That’s why in Naples, they were calling him”the God of sunday”.
After to call him the greatest it’s difficult to compare with others who have been playing at different times. But,while he was playing for Napoli, there was an other great, great footballer doing his job for Juventus:Michel Platini, very different player but what a player. Three times best scorer of Serie A at the time were catennacio was king in Italy. He gave on his own the European Championship for France in 84,scoring 9 goals in 5 games ! Then for the World Cup 82 and 86 he played but was not at 100% because of injury. Specially during Mexico 86. With a fully feat Platini I’m not sure than Maradona would have lift the World Cup !

This is true Platini was a monster but he was not a Maradona. Injuries are a part of the game a lot of pple consider Von Basten as a “couldve been” Best player in history but injuries killed his career. I know I am bias but really Maradona had it all. The Vision, the speed, the moves, the skill, THE HEART, the magic touch, the passes that looked like he measured it with a tape measurer from his foot to its destination, the creativity, DEFENSE which in todays game is unheard of for a “RONALDINHO” to be in front of his own goal taking the ball away. Maradona did everything on the field you can possibly ask a player to do and its not that he just did it but he did it better than anyone else and he did it with a determination that made him unstoppable.

I agree with you Kris, Maradona is certainly the best of the best. My point for France was just than we had I think a better team than Argentina overall which give even more credit to the performance of Diego who gave almost on his own thr victory to Argentina. That was the point I wanted to make as a french….but we didn’t make it, end of the story.
Concerning Ronaldinho, you must have missed his goal at Bernabeu against Real where he took the ball in his own half, run away from 3 defenders to score a wonder goal to Casillas. And he scored in the same game an other very, very good goal on his own to give a 3-0 victory to Barca !
Then they have Robinho who is a rough diamond and who knowns what he’ll become in a few years…

A frenchman huh..thats interesting. On Diego Maradonas show in Argentina recently he had your boy Platini on there and they played a lil game of soccer tennis vs Messi and Tevez. Made a lot of people smile. Messi and Tevez ended up winning but it was nice to see Maradona and Platini on the same squad what a ridiculous combination that would make in a real game.
And what I was trying to say about the “Ronaldinho” playing defense is that im talking about the skillful creators (#10) like a “Riquelme” that you can tell are on another skill level are not pressured to play defense and do not have that determination like Maradona did to tackle players and fight for every ball leaving his ego behind.

Come on!! Are you serious?? Maradona it’s the best futbol player who ever step on soccer field PERIOD. The one who needs to compare Maradona to somebody else means never saw him play, NOBODY does what MARADONA did with the ball, the only one who can get close to him it’s Ronaldinho and that’s even far from DIEGO. One it’s also getting closer to the GOD its Messi, yesterday he gave a futbol lesson to the best players in the world and he is only 18 y/o.
World Cup Final it’s already obvious, ARGENTINA vs. GERMANY, Brazil it’s not going to get to the semifinal, even dough they are the best team in the world.

Germany will not make it to the final!!! And its very hard to predict world Cup Finals but I would like to see 2 big teams like Argentina Germany Italy Brazil England Holland going against each other for the CUP. I would love to see an Argentina vs Brazil FINAL. Do you know the passion that will be involved in that game..WOW the whole world would STOP for 90 minutes…

Diego Maradonna is the best Soccer player ever. The skill, the speed, the left foot. My, my my !! Watch some of those goals during the Napoli carreer and then look at the England Argentina game back a few years ago.

Maradona is a special kind of footballer. He is an entertainer. The field is his playground and the ball is his toy.
He plays with such great passion and enjoys it like a little school boy. Everytime he plays, you could expect something special from him and it leaves an indelible impression.
To me, football is not just about seeing people score goals, Maradona made football exciting and after he retired, football is never the same again. His rampanging runs against the whole line of defence is never to be seen again! Sad.
This makes him different from the rest of the other greats like Pele, Cruyff, Ronaldinho for instance.
His personal life may be messy and he even nearly died but on the field, he is still the undisputed King of Football! And until today, nobody deserve to inherit his crown YET !

Trying to judge Maradona on what’s he’s done outside the pitch is idiotic. This isn’t about who deserves the Good Citizenship award it’s about who was the greatest FOOTBALL player. So please quit using the that argument, it’s beyond stupid. Pele, while being a great player, is simply not Maradona! The things he could do with a ball, his vision, his leadership, his movement, his overall reading of the game will probably never be bettered. The English and the Brazilians will obviously never admit what a true genius Maradona was but please just take a look at his second goal against the England in 1986, that goal is and was the definition of true genius. Who single handedly won one World Cup and led his team to another only to be robbed by the referee? Who lifted Napoli to European heights? Who was voted by the people greatest player of the century? Pele? Please.

A closing quote from Alf Ramsay (1966 World Cup winning coach)
“Pele had nearly everything. Maradona has everything. He works harder, does more and is more skilful. Trouble is he’ll be remembered for another reason. He bends the rules to suit himself.”

these arguements over who was better pele or diego make me sad. inevitably one side starts to criticize the other other which is a shame as they where both great footballers.
However the question of which one of them was the best ever is mute.
It is agreed by most football experts (myself being one) that the greatest ever footballer was ………the divine ponytail……. ROBERTO BAGGIO.

Australia should of won the world cup. First of all usa said that we are in the world cup for numbers at the end there didn’t even make past the group stages. Second of all we had the best coach in the world Guus Hiddink he took in the 02 world cup a team that even won a world cup to the semi the team was korea. Guus Hiddink took austraila a team that never soced a goal in the world before to the top 16. we just lost to brazil the world 1. and still for some dumb reason uruguay is higher than as the table and we beat them. we also only lost to italy because of that pentary that shouldn’t be given. we were all over then one of reason is that there had 10 men but still were all over. If we beat Italy we could of beat ukaine but after that it would be all down hill. only if 1 of germany men got send off we could of beat them or maybe by luck but also in the italy game we had 2 of our beat player not allowed to play. Harry Kewell who is also in the stating lineup for liverpool him had some problem with his hip and Brett Emerton who got 2 yellow cards.

Yo Sim,
First of all Australia shouldn’t have made it out of the first round, it should have been Croatia (a much superior and talented squad in my opinion). Second, If Australia was “all over Italy” as you say than it’s pretty pathetic that your boys couldn’t muster up more than one dangerous shot on goal. You guys were basically handed the game after that horrible red card but you f**ked it up royaly, even Guusy admitted you guys lost because you didn’t take advantage of the situation and Italy did having learned their lesson against Korea in 2002. I really don’t think Kewell would have made a lick of difference. If you did manage to beat Italy you would not have made it to the semi-final, there is no way. Your team is mediocre at best so don’t go getting delusions of grandeur my friend. Australia had a good run thanks to Guusy, the master tactician but now it’s time to face reality.
