Looking ahead to the Ivory Coast

June 3rd, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 63 Comments »

One week from today we’ll be taking on Ivory Coast. The African team will be playing in its first World Cup match. Even without much experience, this is a team that could prove to be tough. From what I have seen of them they are a physical team with good team speed. Getting off to a good start in the first game will help set the tone for the rest of the tournament.

What do you think are the key things Argentina needs to do to in this game?

LOL

Zanetti is actually ne of peckerman’s first Finds as a youth coach, Yes Peckerman’s ties goes that far back. His exclusion as well as Samuel’s has something to do with Veron. He is looking for chemistry. Remember if we are going to win the WC we need to play seven games in one month. The is assembled 3 weeks before the tournament. Therefore 23 ego’s eating , sleeping, relaxing training in a foreign country undr one roof with no outside contact is tricky. It is alleged that this was a big problem last wc

Just watched the Angola match. Hard to analyze the team against an inferior opponent like Angola. What I did like was the crisp passing and ball control. Moreover, I felt that Sorin was dominant and is going to be key to World Cup victories. Crespo looked sharp and Saviola didn’t play as poorly as people have posted on this blog. With that being said, I would still like to Tevez and Messi starting against the Ivory Coast.

Listen Pekerman can’t be as bad as Bielsa. Let’s wait to see what happens before jumping down his throat.

Vamos Argentina!!

diegor, i cant agree with you any better.

Why is everyone crying??? dang, yall are getting really annoying. Use your brains. How is he gonna name his starting 11 one week before the game start? think. think. think.

The saviola, tevez situation first of all isnt even a fact. He probably wanted to play saviola against angola so that he could get some pt time, because TEVEZ has played in all the games for argentina for a while, saviola hasnt because of injuries and not being called. and i dont know why yall are complaining because Burdisso actually looked good.

ALL in ALL, stop whining before you even know the starting 11, either way, we will do great. PERKMAN WANTS TO WIN THIS WAY MORE THAN ANY OF YOU DESIRE.

I think Pekerman is a wise person an as acoach knows things we cannot understand and/or realize. We should have patience.
All great coaches act independently and boldly.. Menotti, Bilardo.. they all were subject to harsh criticism but they made their teams reach WC finals. I think Pekerman has that quality let’s hope, wait and see.. more so because ARG has extremely high level talent in SEVERAl players. I mean other teams wont even discuss this option thingy.. the fact that we are talking about who to play up front.. means something :-)

Ivory Coast is physically superior compared to Argentina. There are two or three players that can make a difference. If the defenders play tight then there shouldnt be a problem. More depends on how Heinz and team contain Drogba.

In paper, Argentina is a better team. But Ivory Coast has players in forward and midfield positions who can match Argentinian players in technical qualities. Their ace striker drogba is a first choice at Chelsea. Chelsea’s famous coach Maurinho thinks Drogba is a better striker than Crespo. So, on most occassions Drogba plays for chelsea, while Crespo sits in the bench and watch Drogba playing. Drogba, Dindane, Kalou, Toure are all world class players. Their only weakness is in the left flank of defence. Boka and Meite/Kouassi are the weak spots in the team. They don’t have a good goalkeeper either. Toure and Eboue are young, but are great defenders playing on the right flank as shown in Champions league matches for Chelsea. Ivory Coast players technically are as good as players from Argentina. But Argentina still has a better chance of winning this match because Africans lack a good strategy, organization and discipline. Africans very often have shown that they are their own worst enemies. There are good chances that one or two Ivory Coast players will be shown red card in this match. So, I think that Argentina will probably win, but don’t think Argentinian players are technically superior. That’s only an illusion and wishful thinking.

of course argentine players are technically superior to the ivory coast! give me a break… we might not be as physical (wait and see wait and see) but technique is precisely were we excel…. look at messi!

i think you don’t know what “technically superior” means…

ivory coast? who are they?

i back pekerman 100%….after the game i think i can criticize but before its even started?

well ill be quick to point out that

saviola is the highest scorer at sevilla

tevez is voted the best player in south america

crespo has a better goals per shot average (drogba is inaccurate)

riqueleme led villareal to the champ league semi final

messi totaly made chelsea’s defense look like they were in the special olympics compared to him

aimar won the best player in spain award for the year and is also voted as the most important player at valencia

i can go on

but its evident that we should not under estimate our oposition but at the same time we should not under estimate our own team

Argentines have better think of winning games from the 2nd match onwards. Ivorians are superior in the group formation at the moment and no one can stop them from this group.

Hello everyone, the game between Ivory and Argentina is a tough one. All I KNOW is that Ivory wont loose, with that said it doesnt mean that will win. Argentina have great players on every position, they have experience but alot of people also have expections. So they have the pressure. Ivory has a worldclass defence, and its very difficult to score against them. They played 1-1 against italy away, and they lost 3-2 against spain away (they took the lead with both 1-0 and 2-1). They kicked out both Cameroon and Nigeria out of the african nations cup, and after full time it was a draw in the final against egypt (who had homecourt), it was after penaltykicks that egypt won.

So the lack with ivory is lack of international experience (national team games) and their goalkeeper. Except for that, their team isnt less good than argentina. They have players like Kolo Toure (Arsenal), Emmanuel Eboue (Arsenal), Didier Zokora (St Etienne), Arouna Kone (PSV Eindhoven), Bakari Kone (Nice) and Didier Drogba (Chelsea).

If u ask me, Ivory will either draw 1-1 or win 1-0 against Argentina, to everyones surprise. However, it is NOT a surprise, because on paper they are as good as Argentina and have the typical technique and speed that so many times have knocked out both argentina and brazil. So, sorry, but just being honest:
Viva Cote Divoire!!!!!!

I don’t think many of the people here have watched the Ivory Coast. Coments like, African teams are not smart or that one or two Ivory Coast players will be sent off shows alot of ignorance and lack of respect for a very good team. We will not make that mistake, we respect the opponent.
If African players are not intelligent as stated here by someone who has a superiority complex, Kolo and Ebeaue would not be at Arsenal, Drogba whould not be starting ahead of Crespo at Chelsea, Yaya Toure would not be a target of MANU, Kalou would not be PSV’s playmaker and the list goes on. Remember Valareal lost to Arsenal who had 4 players of African decent, does that prove that Valareal players are not as intelligent.

come on guys !!! Argentina is the best team in the world by far with Brazil !!
why you worried about who gonna start between saviola and Carlitos ? who give a hell about that ? saviola is a super player and can shine too !! remeber he’s the one who helped Roman and crespo when we burned brazil 3-1 !!!
Of Course Tevez is spectacular and much better than saviola physically, mentally and technically. Carlitos is a genius and definitely one of the top 5 best forward in the world and a lot of people will realize that real soon ’cause he gonna shine in the WC 2006 along Riquelme !!!
By the way Roman is the best number 10 in the world by far and the best player in the world with Ronnie. he can do everything with the ball, he’s magic and a future legend and Maradona said
he’s very happy that Romy wears number 10 !!! Ivory Coast is a good little squad but too weak infinitely too weak to beat Argentina so my point of view : 2-0 or 4-1 for the Albiceleste !! and don’t worry about Tevez and Messi
they gonna be this WC superstars and believe me Romy will break every team
we’ll win this World Cup… Vamos Argentina

After all discussions, Argentina won. It was a difficult match, especially the last minutes, but the numbers, at the end, will be the memory (except in cases of “Superb Goals”). It is not confirmism, just enjoying a good match, and know the point we’re aheading. It’s win the match, the most fairly as possible, but principally, gain the 3 points to go to the next stage. So, let’s see what happens on next Friday. Vamos Argentina, carajo!

I think the 1st half argentina played excellent against the ivory coast. The 2nd half however, i believed we didnt try because we were sure of a 2-0 which disappointed me after the ivory coast made the 1st goal. We have to give it our the best the WHOLE game if we want to win the cup. I think we have one heck of a chance!!!!!!!!! :) As far as the players who played in the game, Burdisso surprised me; he played amazingle and so did crespo. I believe, however, Pekerman should of put Messi and Tevez the secind half. We would of scored at least 2 more goals!

12 june: after watching argentina’s unconvincing win over the Ivorians, as an albiceleste fan i’m really concerned. if this is what arg can do, then we have big problems. in the second half the midfield couldn’t cope with the pressure, giving away the ball like amateurs, and the Ivorians broke through time and time again. we were lucky not to have conceded more goals.

i’m not going to get into the Tevez v Saviola debate, but certainly i have serious doubts about Pekerman. i fear that, once again, argentina will fall because of poor tactics and decisions. remember the disastrous Bielsa in 2002? what a retard.

the talent is there, but you get the feeling Pekerbrains doesn’t know how to use these world-class players. Shame: the albiceleste have some of the best players in the world.
and what about Zanetti and Mario Santana? why the hell aren’t they in the squad? if not in the starting line-up, then at least include them in the 23. unbelievable.
Pekerman, if argentina fail it will be your fault alone.

does anyone know why peckerhead didnt even give carlitos a run? granted saviola scored and went on one of two decent runs, surely the fresh legs of tevez would have finished off the game for argentina.. anyone know if tevez will start the next game ? any rumours going around or anything? have a big bet on him being top scorer and argentina winning it out
