Is that it? We’re on top!

June 14th, 2006 | By: Jonathan | 78 Comments »

We’ve seen just about everyone… Brazil, Germany, Italy, France, Mexico, Portugal, Czech Republic… USA.
The only major powerhouse left to see is Spain, but so far, nobody has shocked the world.

I like our position in this cup. Argentina has a tough game against S&M, and another one against Holland… and that should be good prep for the next round.

Now that you’ve seen everyone else, what do you think our chances are?
Are we the best that you’ve seen?
Does Brazil still scare the rest of the world?

Who’s the most surprising team?

Few personal things about my world cup adventure:

1. The phones in Holland are a complete joke if you’re not from here.
You simply can’t make a 1-800 call… not 00-800, not 00-1-800, not one zero, nothing…
Basically they should have a pre-recording in english, so as soon as you pick up the headset you hear,
“if you speak Dutch, press 1… if you speak english… go F yourself.”
Because that’s how it works.

2. Don’t drive in Amsterdam, don’t bike in amsterdam… basically, just get out of the way.
People run over you here with trains, bikes, cars and anything else they can possibly use as transportation.
God help this city if they ever discover the segway.

3. Germans are very, VERY polite people.
I think they’re really trying because of that whole Nazi history thing… Kinda a dark blemish, but even Germans are amazed at the image us Americans have….
“You’re American?… Oh, Jesus.”
And their women are very attractive too.

4. I wish more people in the states would drive tiny cars like they do in Europe.
Gas isn’t much of a problem, it’s easy to park and you look pretty damn cool driving a car you can put in your pocket.

5. The Euro cleans it’s butt with the American dollar.
You give a teller 100 american dollars and she laughs at you, then gives you a handful of change and metro ticket.
What the hell is that?

6. Did I mention the women in Germany are very attractive?
The girls in Holland are slim, but they’re all lankey. You would think that since they ride their bikes all day long, they would be more tone, but no… just skin, bones and a pale face.
To each their own… Maybe next summer I’ll do some more research around Europe if my wife doesn’t mind. :D

7. The world cup should be a national holiday. The WHOLE MONTH.
How can people work with all this great soccer around them?

These guys train for 4 years… building their best possible team, and we can’t even take off to watch them play?!?!

I don’t know what I’ll do when I get back.
I’m here until Argentina’s last group game, then it’s back home.
I think I’m catching a cold…. wink wink…

Your thoughts?

I believe with those excellent squad, the world cup champion is not just a dream.
Bring back it to Argentina like it was in 1986.

Stop with Spain! They were very realistic and a bit lucky with the 2 first goals, and helped with that fucking referee for the 2 others.

I’m happy that all people are focusing with Spain, Brazil and Germany or even England.

Argentina is like Riquelme, a snake that nobody hears, and that will bite with a win on this tournament.

Vamos Argentina.

Latest news:

Lionel Messi is likely to feature but will not start for Argentina against Serbia & Montenegro despite a new injury setback. The Barcelona star took a blow on the instep of his left foot in training on Wednesday, and is not in coach Jose Pekerman’s starting line-up, which was announced on Thursday.

But team doctor Donato Villani has given the teenager the all-clear to play in Friday’s Group C clash, and Pekerman said the 18-year-old was part of his plans.

“Today, he got up without feeling any pain. If all goes well he will be on the bench tomorrow,” said Pekerman.

Messi - who has played only a handful of minutes since injuring a thigh in February - remained rooted to the bench in his nation’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast on Saturday.

Striker Carlos Tevez may not be fit to take his place alongside Messi on the bench after picking up a stomach ailment.

“He vomited, a stomach problem, maybe partly to do with the heat,” Pekerman said. “As a precaution we decided he should not go out in the sun today.”

Starting lineup (4-3-1-2):

1.Roberto Abbondanzieri - 21.Nicolas Burdisso, 2.Roberto Ayala, 6.Gabriel Heinze, 3.Juan Pablo Sorin - 22.Luis Gonzalez, 8.Javier Mascherano, 18.Maxi Rodriguez - 10.Juan Roman Riquelme - 7.Javier Saviola, 9.Hernan Crespo

I am watching the match now… England is completely unconvincing. Out of shape. I think they will need a miracle.

I also predicted 3-1 result, but again, I had my doubts that we can score 3 goals against stingy defense. I am predicting a goal midway of each half.

I’m sick of this messi crap.
leave Pek in peace and let him do his work.
and if Messi doesn’t play in the whole WC, that’s good. it will build character. he’s a bratty boy who doesn’t celebrate a victory if he doesn’t play.
Ronaldo didn’t play a single minute in USA 94. today he’s a fat ass, but I think we’ll agree that he is (or was) a killer forward. but that didn’t seems to afeect negatively his brillant career.

Idiot. How is he bratty - because he wants to play? Thats called desire. To want to represent the national team is bratty? Your comparison to Ronaldo ‘94 makes no sense.

For the record…

Did you REALLY think you could call a 1-800 number from abroad? Have you never been to a foreign country? You thought you could make a free international phone call?

Honestly. You won’t be able to call a 1-800 number from any foreign country (and we’re not talking about Hawaii here), nor will you be able to call the equivalent free numbers in Europe from an American phone.

Interesting topic… I’m working in this industry myself and I don’t agree about this in 100%, but I added your page to my bookmarks and hope to see more interesting articles in the future
