Hours before the game

June 28th, 2007 | By: Messay Getahun | 121 Comments »

We are only a few hours before our beloved Argentina kicks off the 2007 Copa America tournament. So, where are most of you watching the games at? what are you looking forward from seeing in this game?

As for me, I will be in my house, watching it alone. Whenever i want to analyze a game, i prefer to watch it at a quite place. thats just me.

I am curious to see Riquelme. I want to see how he plays with Messi.

My wish? - this may be selfish, but I really really hope i get to see Aimar, Riquelme, and Messi play together. that would just be mouth watering.

I will write something after the game, for now lets just talk about the game. and whats going on during the game. You guys are awesome. I really feel like we have a great family in this site. May the Lord bless you all. I hope it turnes out to be a great game.

Though I can understand a lot of people thought this was gonna be an Argentinian showoff, ala Serbia Montenegro.

Got to give credit to USA - their 11 men defense was highly effective today. Essentially, they closed down the flanks and double teamed Riquelme, giving him no space. Argentina had to earn all their goals and they did it in style imo.

MVP: Riquelme (2.5 assists) and good possesion game.

yeyyyyyyyyyy god I am really happy. Riquelme does make difference. I am not saying Argentina was playing its best, but compare to our friendlies we played better. Aimar was stunning. Mascherano and Zanetti did a good job. Veron was mostly out played except for his killer shot in the 1st half. I think we need to start Aimar with Riquelme because Aimar does the running and Riquelme can concentrate on creating opportunities. Tevez should also start. Oh my god we have so many great players in the mid filed and Forward position, I wish I could say the same thing about our defense. G Millito sucked big time.
Vamos Argentina te quiero mucho

What the crap did veron do all match. I know we should give him a chance, but he didnt do anything all match. But, it was nice to see our three number 10’s (Veron, Riquelme and Aimar) on at the same time.

Job done. The US team didn’t control the game. They did defend well & our system didn’t adapt but barring one or two set pieces can you think of a worthy US chance ?

For the next game I would rest the likes of Crespo for later on in the tournament & keep the likes of Pablito & Messi wrapped up in cotton wool .Furthermore the whole squad needs to be used ie Palacio & Milito.D.

Off to a long delayed nap. Bad luck Donovan your team did you credit.

Chau to you all until the next time. :)

Well that’s that!

Argentina won convincingly without ever dominating fully. Mascherano put in a masterly performance.

Once Aimar came on, the balance of the team shifted, and they played a lot better. His quick runs pushed the US defence further back, and that made the biggest difference. Or maybe the US got tired?

Anyways, 3 points in the bag, and some confidence to move forward!

This is a great result for Arg, in that the US really pushed them to find their game, and they did. I think that Cambiasso will start the next game on the bench. let Riquelme and Aimar play together, they just love each other, you can tell. Wonderful goals. Hope they can carry this on and build from this.

As to the US — no surprises. I knew that they were going to be tough. They had a good game plan and they stuck to it as long as they could. One thing though — The GolTV people? Dead to me.

even with a biased referee like this, Argentina came on top and won with awesome style :)
once they scored that goal those commentators shut the fuck up!! they talked so much bullshit, they should get fired.
mane.. you are an idiot, also posting bullshit, Argentina won by far, USA did fuck all it was the referee that gave you some hope.
That goal from Aimar, amazing.
Vamos Argentina.

Nice win.

Argentinian players not playing together in awhile is NOT an excuse.

This US team last played together, umm, never…! I didn’t even know who some of these knuckleheads were — some guys are college kids, and the first time this team got together was for the plane ride down to Venezuela a couple of days ago.

Heh.

Well, again, congratulations on the nice win.

another thing, Veron should be on the bench.. he did nothing but shoot at the goal once. Change Aimar for Veron or Tevez, any player will do I guess.

Yeah - but –it’s much easier to put together a team to simply defend, than to put together a team to play with any offensive style. We are talking apples and oranges here. Arg is expected to be like the harlem globetrotters, not a team that is just learning the ropes.

Arg players are setting the bar a tad higher than, oh let’s see who will be good for the next few years. They are in this to win it.

Mane, you are insane!!

If the goal by Tevez was offside, then, George Bush is not the president of the U.S.A.

Huo ni upumbavu!

That is kiswahili for ‘that is stupidity.’

Alexa - “it’s much easier to put together a team to simply defend”

Every time a less technical, but with better physical and speed team plays against Arg, they’ll be ultra-defensive & counter-attack. Even as good as Germany

We should have a NAME for this style, anybody?

Hello you all, I see some interesting comments here. First, Lake, what’s the matter with you? Why do you insult me? I am visiting this blog to express an opinion just like you do and even if we disagree I think it is uncalled for and in low class to insult people for no reason. You think Argentina played good? Fine, I don’t. I expect more from Argentina because they are better than that and that is not an insult but a compliment.

Native Son, ditto!! IMAO the goal was offside and it turns out that many commentators share that view. In the end what matters is that it counted as a goal so chill out.

Fab, I only post with my nick and no other one. I am not here as a fan of the US even if I am posting from the US. As a matter of fact I am Canadian born to Spaniard parents. I enjoy soccer and welcome it without regard as to who plays it. I must admit that I have a soft spot for Brazil but who doesn’t? Brazil is the quintessential favourite but I recognize talent when I see it as it is the case with Aimar, Messi, Teves so what’s your beef dude? Relax you all.

I think that other than the US playing the game they know how to play (defensive and locking the middle) there was a horrible disconnect between Riquelme and Veron. I agree that Veron should sit out and Aimar should be in. Why is it so hard for some of you to recognize the excellent discipline of an US team that without tradition is applying itself to the game? If we truly enjoy soccer we should welcome this as it will translate in a future for the game. PEace.

Yes Rune, I share your view. This reminds me of Brazil in Germany how everybody wss deluding themselves by Brazil defeating weaker teams and turning that into a sense that Brazil was doing great but we know what happened. I don’t want to see Argentina to fall into that trap and it is now that changes have to be made.

what matters in the end is how many times you put the ball in the net. i rather play bad and score four goals than to play well and score 0 or 1. this an international event and all the players are professionals. therefore there are no bad teams here. some have more quality and depth than others. yet all these guys can compete at a high level.
