Get El Pato out of Goal!

March 3rd, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 9 Comments »

I’m not sure how Pekerman can start Pato in goal at the World Cup. The guy is brilliant one minute and horrible the next. He is not consistent at all and I don’t think his teammates have much confidence in him. I’m not saying he is the entire reason for the goals that have been let in, but I think we need a better keeper in Germany.

So between Leo Franco, Germán Lux, and Sessa, who would you choose? I like Franco when he is on form. Lux just seems a bit too shaky for me and Sessa doesn’t seem like a big game player. Or maybe we need someone else? Anyone but Abbondancieri.

Barbosa of Villareal. Steady keeper and agile. He was involved in champions league games for Vilarreal and from what ive seen so far of him, he looks better than Lux( dodgy or what), Pato (lost faith in him). I dont what franco is like but i think barbosa should be included as backup. Better than Pato and Lux by a long mile.

Villareal have some good argies in the squad who were involved in getting the club to fourth place in the league and to the champions league…rodriguez, arruabarrena etc.

Last good keeper we’ve had was Carlos Roa. He was exceptional, and then its been all downhill with Cavellero, Burgos, Bonano, Lux, Abbondanzieri, Sessa, walter cabellero. Them names send a shudder down your spine.

maybe he should look into Ustari, a youngster that plays for independiente and is supposedly very good. Lux had a clean sheet throughout the olympics, right?

neverthless, he will be reluctant to change keepers so close to the cup.

this decision is a gamble, i just hope our defenders can get healthy, so we have less to worry about.

Goals are going to come no matter whos in goal if the defense continues to play like jello..The only goals you can blame on a goalie our the ones that come through his own mistake. But 99% of all goals should be blamed on the players not the goalie. When you get to the professional level there isnt a big difference in talent for goalies. It comes down to reading the game, positioning urself, and the rest is luck/how good your defense is.

Even though I think Pato is overrated if we have another goalie its not gonna change the outcome of matches its the field players that need to start playing with some passion.

I agree with Kris here however abbondenzieri isnt the right man for argentina. I agree with the comment on the blame being placed on the 10 outfield players for goals conceded, but the defence needs to be reassured that their is a competent man between the sticks. We’ve got to play with passion but we need a good keeper if we are to make progress.
The root of the problems must be dealt with.
One thing is true, the keeper looks out of his depth but he cannot be blamed as badly as that defence in front of him. No communication or cohesion between them.

Please hurry back ayala and heinze.

God bless this blog and may Pekerman read it…Oscar Ustari is the best we’ve got right now. Abondanzieri is a complete catastrophe.

Totally disagree with Kris on relevance of goalkeeper. Despite these last few dodgy outings - Argentina’s defense is THE BEST IN THE WORLD. After all if we’re better than Brazil it won’t be because Kaka, Ronaldinho, Adriano and Ronaldo will be much outclassed - it’ll be because Zanetti, Ayala, Heinze & Sorin can’t be beat. Add Mascherano and Cambiasso as defensive midfielders and it’s as good as any team has ever had. If you added, say, a Barthez or Buffon or Dida - Man, that would be incredible.

Ustari is young and inexperienced, but he’s got all the skills and can handle the crosses that so seem to puzzle Abondanzieri and Lux. Franco has skills but he’s as erratic as Lux and makes some seriously stupid decisions.

I have never seen Franco play before and was kind of hoping we could rely on him in the world cup, but looking at JP’s comments i’m wondering about him too. We dont need to bother with the other 2 goalkeepers that are coming. Just the one reliable keeper will do. I hope Ustari is as good as you lot are making him out to be.
