Diego Maradona To Offered Coaching Position with National Team
BREAKING NEWS: Reports are flying out of Argentina that Julio Grondona, President of AFA, is meeting with Diego Maradona this evening to offer el Diez a coaching position with the National Team.
According to various reports, Carlos Bilardo, heach coach of the 1986 World Cup winning team, will be offered the position of head coach, with Maradona possibly serving as number two.
In an interview with an Argentine radio station, Grondona admitted that the role of head coach could not be held by only one person, a statement that would seem to eliminate Carlos Bianchi, who only yesterday was considered the favorite to succeed Alfio Basile.
It’s important to stress that these are still rumors, and the exact role which Maradona might play has yet to be determined, but the latest reports are all suggesting that Diego is as close as ever to the managerial role he has for so long coveted.
Stay tuned for all the latest news.

i don’t think it will be as bad as some of us are thinking, it can’t be any worse than it already was, we should just wait and see.

I hope I’m wrong, for the sake of La Selección, but this was my worst case scenario.
There’s going to be like about 8 people involved in the decision making.

It’s a very fast line-up, Papa must be a left-back, though he’s played a lot in the midfield for Velez Sarsfield. It will be interesting to see it in action.

Whatever happens i just hope it’s for the betterment of the team.

What on earth are they thinking? Maradona? I can’t fricking believe it. Are they high?
OK - please, Argentines, please help me understand this decision. Because on the outside it looks like frying pan into fire.

I think he should be given a fair chance, i don’t think that things will get worse, in fact i think that we’ll see an improvement, especially if we can get rid of the reliance of having a team built around Riquelme.

Dear Alexa, I really don’t know what to say to you.
You know my opinion about Maradona.
This is unbelievable to me.

England gets Fabio Capello, and Argentina rests one of their greatest generations on …. Maradona? I fell in love with football because of maradona. He was the reason. But they need an actual…coach.
I can’t believe it. Somebody has to talk me down.

I am not very disappointed. Maradona is a winner. He will probably get that in the team. The presence of Bilardo is what makes me most happy. He will do all the preparation and all the leg work. The combination could work out.
Only worrying thing is Maradona’s indiscipline. That has always been a problem.. But anyways I am hopeful.

I second that Debashish, we need that winners mentality and motivation, we’ve lacked it for quite a while. I have a good feeling.

It sounds good that all those other people are on the staff. But I can tell you this — get 6 South Americans in a room for a meeting, and you’ll get a week long argument on how best to open the proceedings.
God I sound horrible. Maybe i should just speak for Ecuadorians.

Madness. How long is Argentina going to keep shooting themselves in the foot ? Will there be huge recriminations after 2010. What will it take to remove this idiot from head of the AFA ?
No one here can believe that such a ‘poor’ decision can be made.
He could not even manage in the second division how the hell can he manage Argentina ?
Its a deliberate insult to Bianchi from the bastardo Grondona. Offer the job Then at the last minute say the job will be shared , knowing full well that Carlos will not accept it under those conditions.
We’ve already losst Diaz nd now Bianchi forever to the NT if these rumours are true.
Grondona has settled some scores and typically made another poor decision that only benefits hsi own position. He is a complete ******.
Will it be the Diego and friends now ie Troglio and all his ex teammates from 86 & 90. The NT position is too important to be treated like a post to give to your own favourites.
Such a policy in whatever field rarely works. Sorry to sound so gloomy before a ball has been kicked in anger but this sucks. Why Papa now for instance when Monzon can do the jo or Ansaldi ?
By the way Happy Diwali to all our Indian contributors.
Saludos. ![]()
