D’Alessandro at Portsmouth

March 17th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 11 Comments »

Pretty interesting article about Andres D’Alessandro and his recent move to Portsmouth from VfL Wolfsburg. Playing for a team fighting relegation, D’Alessandro hopes that he will have the chance to rediscover his magic and to work his way on to the World Cup team. Time is ticking and he hasn’t featured the last couple of friendlies. The guy does have amazing ball control but you have to figure he is on the fringe of Pekerman’s final 23 and it could go either way.

I love D’Alessandro.
Although, I don’t know where he would fit in the current national team.

Maybe as a sub for Riquelme…

I’ m a huge fan of Andres D’alessandro. He can dance a rumba around Riquelme, and the team could use his speed; but, from the talk around the watercooler in Argentina, he has NO chance of making the cut, not this cup anyway. A shame.
And i love Riquelme as i loved Veron, but we need Aimar and D’alessandro.

I think he is good but he hasn’t been in a good side for a long time and has surely lost polish.

I don’t think he has a place in the national side.

Riquelme is the obvious first choice for Peckerman followed by Aimar.

If I had a choice between Veron and Alessandro I’d go for Veron. He is just more experienced and the squad needs the right mix.

I agree with Pugnate there. I really feel Veron should be brought back in again now.But I am pretty shure that will never happen.Pekerman does no like him, I think. This frustrates me!

I think that Aimar and alessandro are both far better then Veron. Veron was good in his prime but now we need to let the youngster show their magic. I think that aimar and alessandro are much faster and more creative then veron, you can say that veron has a better touch but soccer is more about speed and strength these days. I would difentily call alessandro to the National team along side with cambiasso

Veron has the reputation of being poison in the locker room (Riquelme used to suffer from this perceived ‘attitude’ problem as well). He does show flashes of his old self, but I associate him with Argentina’s catastrophe in Japan and would rather not have him around. I went to Japan/Korea ‘02 and remember the headlines a day be “before Argentina’s first game: “Veron Protests Japan’s Barring of Maradona”…I remember thinking “Oh, oh, this guy’s head isn’t where it should be right now…

I remember watch andres in 2002-2003 time frame with River and in a friendly against the US and I thought this kid is the maestro in midfield for argentina. Then he went to Wolfsburg? and now he’s at Portsmouth. Even the proudest from Pompei would admit that River is a much bigger club with better interantional exposure and all that.

What happened? Did i over estimate him at River or did he take a turn for he worse?
