Copa America

April 5th, 2007 | By: Messay Getahun | 183 Comments »

The Copa America is approaching fast and our national team hasnt played since their victory over france in mid Februrary.

My question is simple. Which players should be selected?

In my humble oppinion; i like Basile’s idea of training with players, but i see the copa as the foundation for the future of our national team in preparation for 2010 world cup. So we must use this opportunity to call players that have a shot at making it to the world cup, or call players that could teach the youngans a thing or two.

Here are my list of players that must be at the tournament.

Messi, Aguero, Tevez, Gago, Mascherano, AIMAR, D Milito, G Milito, Heinze, G. Rodriguez, Lucho, Ustari, Higuain, Crespo, Ayala, Sebastian leto, Neri Cardozo

Riquelme, the blogger it is an old movie,

please remember that my philosophy is to provoke so as to IMPROVE;

Take it or leave it, I believe that I am a winner based on the over- whelming responses that I receive…

Please remember that as long as you can be provoked to think you will always be a winner irrespective of your thought …

the chanting for argentina during the Man U game was for heinze:

“Manchester United fans chant “Argentina!” to frustrate opposition fans, and these chants have increased since the signing of Argentinian International Gabriel Heinze”

the chanting is usually started by the “firm” of Man U (Man U hooligans) and is spread around the field.I think as the talk about a possibility of signing Tevez, these chants are gaining more momentum.

I saw the Garay goals yesterday. 2 penalties kicked very well against the best keeper of la liga. He managed to correct his mistake that cost Santander a goal (100% his fault). Many says he’s a good defender, i still haven’t seen him playing yet.

Cavenaghi played 15 minutes yesterday with Bordeaux against PSG. He had one opportunity, on his first ball, superb volley but too high. He should have scored, too bad… Then, he ran after the ball. He couldn’t catch it, even when Bordeaux had it, because of horrible passes from his teamates!

Homage to 3 of our huge players that will probably quit after la Copa. I’m happy to say that i saw them many times at San Siro during 5 years.

Crespo frightened everybody in the stadium. He was so dangerous. He reminds me Batigol, believe it or not. Parma had a wonderful team: Crespo, Balbo, Veron, Ortega, Thuram, Cannavaro, Sensini, Buffon…a dream team! He was a killer (Madjer specialist) also at Lazio. Laurent Blanc made only one mistake in his career, Crespo was there. Watch this.

Il capitano was great. He’s called the tractor in Italy. Collective and individual only when it was needed. I remember the times when he dribbled all the field just like Diego. Amazing game last year against Villareal. HUGE player! Except for Pekerman.

I was a kid when i saw him first. At that time, Franco Baresi (Milan) had just retired and was a legend to replace. I was a child, i wanted Baresi to come back so i waited a mistake from the “new one”. It never happened. I love Roberto Ayala much more than Baresi now. Passionate, flies like an eagle, jumps like a kangouroo. And he’s a striker too.

well, i am hoping argentina will at least pull of a draw against chile. i am just not confident enough in a local based team and i don’t expect them to win. but the question is will chile field a local based team lets not forget they too have big name players playing in europe

maxilopez,

Thanks for the video about Ayala.

Unfortunately, Ayala made a big mistake in his career in 1998 when he allowed Berkamp to score in a crucial game against Holland.

But, football in contrast to life, give many chances to redeem oneself. He did so specially in WC2006 against Ivory Coast.

As you pointed in your video, he also SCORED a goal that was NOT allowed in WC 2006. This is an entirely different issue which points that unless ARGENTINA plays every game like against Serbia, the chances of winning WC2010 is really slim. What El Coco is doing right now with ONLY the home grown players, is very depresssing to say the least. How do a player of the caliber of Messi, Tevez integrate their games when ONLY homegrown players are allowed! what is even more sad is that the Argentina public allows this to happen… Remember Tevez got a chance because the WEST ham FANS puts pressure on the coach and Franck Ribery got a chance to play in WC2006 because the public pressured the French coach Dominique. When will the Argentina public learn? This is a good question for Albo to answer as he is from Argentina.

I am beginning to believe that the real enemy lies WITHIN. Unless Argentina has a foreign coach who will play the best eleven, it will not be possible for them to win another wc, less wc2010. Time will tell if I am wrong or right….

Ken,
I have different opinion on this.
I think Basile is just trying to set up a system, disciple and experiment with stratigies with whoever is available for the national team.
The benefit of doing this is, when Messi or Crespo arrive for the national team, they just can fit into the system, which has already been set up.
If you just wait for all of your stars which can rarely happen, then you are starting from zero level.

I’m strongly against a foreigner coach for Argentina. It would be the worst choice.

Passarella and Bielsa were horrible coaches. I liked Pekerman but he did terrible mistakes. The problem comes from AFA and their chief, Blatter’s friend, Grondona.

Don’t worry for la Copa, Basile isn’t stupid. Our “european” guys are so tired. They must rest. They can’t afford to play much. Just look Brazilians like Ronaldinho or Kaka, they are dead. Ronaldinho won’t even go to la Copa. Henry can’t play anymore, every muscles makes him suffer. Blatter business calendar is sh#t.

But our “european” players must train together, it’s obviously important.

I was thinking: why didn’t we win WC 02 with these great players we had? Wow. Batigol, Crespo, Claudio Lopez, Aimar, Ayala,… A horrible joke.

To finish, Crespo, Ayala & Zanetti deserved a WC. La Copa must be their gift.

Maxilopez,
I am glad you also agree that “our European players must train together”. I think ALL the players must play and train together.

Riquelme, the blogger,

what you stated appears very good ONLY in theory or on paper. Soccer or football is a collective sport and heavily depends on “tactics ” or strategical approach at the highest level such as CL and WC.
Did you not see how Barcelona was kicked out of CL this year and how Messi was easily neutralized during CL. That is he could not play his usual game. How can we beat all that without having the best 11 on the field? And to compound our problem, refering does not seem to do justice to Argentina. Examle wc2006!
Maxilopez, I still believe that Kaka is deadly on counter attacks, specially in his “FINISHING”. Regarding Ronaldihno, there may be other issues not related to Football that may be affecting him. Remember these fellows are fotballers, not intellects who have better ability to deal with the complexities of life; a lot of money give you more choices in life, but does not necessarily makes you smarter..

Maxilopez,
we would never know whether a foreign coach is good for Argentina until we try one! If you make Klinsman the coach of argentina, I am sure things would be different!

Kenny Boy!!

Wonder why I’m the elusive playboy around here ?! :-) I just love women dude, its as simple as that ! :-) :-)

Watching the performances during the week and over the weekend has really troubled me a bit about the NT again. We seem to be in a transition phase and are not able to settle in some of the positions -

1. Playmaker in the midfield - who’ll fill the gap left by Riquelme? I hope he comes back because Aimar honestly seems to be a couple of levels below Riquelme’s creativity in recent times.

2. Striker - D. Milito is definitely the most consistent of the lot - but he doesn’t seem to be Basile’s first choice.

We aren’t going to find out a whole lot from now to Copa, simply because we don’t play enough friendlies! Not sure what is gained from the game against Chile. We might find a few players impressive - but then what? How will the final team to Copa gel?

Sorry about the rant! Extremely frustrating.

Must go now and see some hot women to calm the mind.

Vick

Watching Boca-River. 1-0 at pause. Great intensity. Riquelme seems good and shoots corner kicks.

I don’t like baisle because he tends to call up a lot of boca players for example the game agaisnt brazil. I would like to see Mario Kempes as head coach. I think the coaches and staff should be all argentinean because having a german coach kinda of ruins it. That what I don’t like for example england wants to hire the coach that lead brazil to the 2002 world cup. It’ll be all the rich nations will get the good coaches. It should be the same way the players get treated you need citizen of that country to play or manage a national team.

The other day I was reading an article saying what ever country you were born in you have to play for that country. There is a lot of good players who were born in argentina but play for another country.

Golazo,
glad to hear from you; actually glad to hear from anyone..

Mario Kempes was an outstanding player. Unfortunately, he has openly criticized Roman for being “slow”. What he does not seem to appreciate is that Roman’s genius compensates by making “the ball moves”. In that way he does not have to and thus conserve his energy..

Do you still remember Batigol, the blogger? He is no longer with us as it appears that he moved back to his native land, Emirates after completing his studies in the US.

Anyway, Batigol in a previous post made a list of a number Argentinean players that were left OUT of the NT team at the time they were PEAKING with their local clubs. Basically, the national coach of Argentina has had serious problems in picking the best 11 because of their own INSECURITIES. We know for example that Passarella did not pick players with “long hair”. Is n’t that ridiculos?

Carlos Bilardo who made Maradona, the Captain went through hell with the press because he did so. The press stopped hounding him only after Argentina won the 1986 wc. By the way I believe that Argentina won wc1986 not only because of maradona but also because Bilardo, a medical doctor, introduced a “new” system at that time which could be unlocked by other national teams.

That’s it. 1-1. Each team could have won. Ruben could have scored 2 goals at the end but Carrizo made amazing saves before(one on a FK from Roman). Wow. The ball never went out, always on the field. Love it.

Te quiero Argentina, a vida.

Boca dominated the most of the game and deserved to win. So sad they didn’t.
Crespo should not go back to Chelsea. Mourinho just wants him because Drogba and Kalou are to play in the African nations cup for a month. I know Chelsea own him, but I really think Inter will buy him out of the contract.
