Choose the Team!

June 19th, 2006 | By: Jonathan | 61 Comments »

Word on the street is that Holland might rest some of their starters for the Argentina - Netherlands match up.

If you’re Pekerman, do you also rest starters?
Maybe some of the players with cards?

What is your starting lineup for this game?

I would keep Pato in goal.
Chances are he is not going to get a card, unless Argentina is up and trying to kill the clock.

And if Argentina is up, they don’t need to kill the clock as a tie would put them through….

In the back, mix things up with Milito, Colochini and Cufre
Sit Heinze, Ayala and Burdisso… it’s not worth the risk against a fast Dutch team that attacks along the flanks, and they’ll be rested and card-free for the next round.

Midfield, we have to have Sorin. He’s our captain!
Masche can sit, and throw in Aimar and Cambiasso in the center.
Maxi could still play on the wing as he’s playing hot…

Aimar deserves a start, and Riquelme could use the rest before the next round.
Top it off with Tevez and Messi in front… bringing in Palacio and Cruz later in the game, as long as we are tied or winning….

Final score:
Argentina 2
The Netherlands 0

Vamos, carajo!

Does not really make a difference Holland is 1 measure to big for this good Argentina side. I think it will end up like 1998 2-1 for Holland and a great game against the Dutch B team

I think it wouldn’t be negative to be 2nd in our group!

I also believe that Pekerman will name his squad only after Germany-Equador.

If Argentina finish 2nd they will probably face Portugal, England, Brazil and Germany.

If Argentina finish 1st, they will probably face Mexico, Germany, Italy, and Brazil.

I think we must avoid Germany! I know they aren’t a very good team. They aren’t technique. But they are at home and referees will ALWAYS be with them.

MAXI ! I like your enthusiasm, I just think you are jumping ahead a little bit too early. The most importatnt thing for Argentina is to keep playing good and not jump ahead, and take it one game at a time. If we wanna win, we need to win the rest of the games one at a time.
First, lets beat Holland, and give Van de Sar a gift the Argentine style before he opts out to retire, so he can hang on to some memries.

Heinze and Ayala have been phenomenal in the centre of defence. Ayala is a little more composed then Heinze but both give 100 % to the cause. The pair of them racing around trying to block shots and tackle were fantasic to watch.

Turthfully we have excellent players on the bench. As much as Pekerman may change the team i think its a good idea to keep Ayala in the team. He is the one who organises the defence.

Aimar is my favourite player and deserves a chance.

You can understand me wanting to keep the team together as much as possible but in this case we can make changes. Im looking forward to watching Aimar start if he plays, havnt seen him start a game in a long time.

Sorry people i hadnt realised the second round game is only three days after the holland game. I agree with everyone suggesting big changes.

Abbondanzieri, Burdisso, Ayala, Milito, Sorin, Rodriguez, Coloccini, Cambiasso, Aimar, Tevez, Cruz

Strong lineup. He can substitute maxi as he has played the last two games and maybe Sorin.

Come on Aimar, its your time to shine in the World cup and give Pekerman more selection headaches.

Lets remember Rommy doesn’t run much, so, fatigue is not really a factor..lol…. However, I hope Peker doesn’t keep him playing for more than 45 minutes. I also agree with someone who said Ayala should start, he seems disiplined and well aware all the time. Also, I think he should rest in the second half.

I agree with your starting line up john…except for Messi, i think Cruz deserves a start with Messi comingin later on in the game. but definately aimar to start, he deserves at least one start this cup, and it would be a great test for him. i would also like to see coloccinni start in a world cup match, to see what argentinas future defense has in store. i am just happy we are on top, i hope to go far but I am happy now, and i apologize on behalf of all the fans to Pekerman…so far soo goood, vamos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i wish there was a new thread about the argentina-holland match..

anyways…so far the referee draw has been our dream… argentina can’t do better than italian ref (serbia) or spanish ref (tomorrow)…

there is a deep affinity between the argentine and spanish people and i would be very suprised if any refereeing goes against us unfairly..

at the same time its too bad we’re getting these refs now..

i fear in the later stages getting some wacko

i agree with maxi

i think playing germany in germany in the quarters is a recipe for disaster…

but i don’t see what we can do… we can’t lose on purpose….

i don’t think there is any modern precedent for what it would mean for germany not to make the semis in germany…. it would be a huge huge upset… can you imagine it? it would be even bigger than what argentina did in 1990 beating italy in italy..

but either way you look at it its a rough draw..i can’t see england being easy either.. and the intensity required to beat england would be so great.. it would be like a final of sorts..

i don’t think its a big deal if we lose tomorrow….we’ll still be in round of 16 and our path to the semis will actually be easier..

BS website. Argentina and Holland do not want to lose to each other.

I just hope no one gets hurt or suspended (Abbondanzieri!)

I would rest Heinze; Ayala (33yo, needs his rest), Mascherano(Argentina can not do without him. He is the best defensive midfield we have. The other one is Cambiasso, but he does not defend that well; Burdisso, Maxi (another pillar of the team), Saviola, Crespo.

My team would be:

===========Abbo==========
Scal=Coloccini==Milito=Cufre

==Aimar===Cambiasso==Sorin

Messi=================Tevez
============Cruz============

My only gripe with this is Scaloni.
I think he sucks.

I don’t think so, I think: should not change formation.
I like:
_________Leo_________
Coloccini_Milito_Cufré
Scaloni_Cambiasso_Sorin
Messi____Aimar____Tevez
_____Cruz(Palacio)_____

Well, if we meet Germany in the quarters, we just have to beat them then, won’t we? I think meeting the Germans early is better than later, the deeper Germany advances on their home soil, the harder its gonna be to knock’em off. I believe Germany are not as impressive as the may have looked, they are weak at the defensive line, and the argentine offense will expose that greatly and will throw their tactics off. Most important thing for argentina, is to control the midfield, then we can’t be beaten.

Does the odds for an Argentinian win at 1/2 goal advantage to Holland too much(over-rated)..?
(FYI. 1/2 goal adv. to Holland means Argentina can win by 1 goal or more margin)
Both teams won’t be playing 100%..,right?
