Chau Pekerman, Hola Basile

July 23rd, 2006 | By: Nick | 156 Comments »

Pekerman has deffinately left the coach seat, and has been replaced by Alfio Basile.

Here’s a little extract from wiki.com:

Alfio Rubén Basile (born November 1, 1943 in Bahía Blanca), also known as El Coco, is an Argentine football (soccer) coach and former player.

El Coco Basile started playing in the small Bella Vista club from his home city. Then played from 1964 to 1970 for Racing Club, and for Huracán until 1975.

After retirement, Basile coached a number of Argentine teams, most notably Rosario Central, Racing Club, Huracán and Vélez Sársfield and then Uruguayan Nacional, Spanish Atletico de Madrid.

But his career as a coach peaked in the early 1990s, when he led the Argentine national football team to two Copa America victories. The run-up to the 1994 FIFA World Cup looked smooth until a 5-0 defeat at home to Colombia. Following that traumatic event, Diego Maradona was brought back from retirement to play a play-off against Australia.

Here is a clip of Diego in the 1994 World Cup training session -

In the World Cup itself, Argentina opened with two stunning victories over Greece and Nigeria. Maradona was tested for doping after the Nigeria match, and was suspended after ephedrine was found in his sample. Argentina was swiftly eliminated after losing its round-of-16 match against Romania.

Basile went on to coach San Lorenzo de Almagro, Mexican América and Colón de Santa Fe with varying success. In July 2005 he assumed the post of coach at Argentine Boca Juniors to obtain, only a month later, the Recopa Sudamericana 2005. He then he obtained his first Argentine league title in the 2005 Apertura tournament. Four days later, Boca won Copa Sudamericana 2005 against UNAM Pumas of Mexico.

In July 2006, he was offered again the Argentinan National Football Team coach position.

Alfio Basile current coach of Boca Juniors will in return probably be replaced by Ricardo De Lavolpe, the Mexican Coach who has also resigned after the defeat against Argentina in the World Cup :p

I must say, personally I wouldn’t have picked Alfio Basile, but what can you do.. nothing. We will have to see and hope for the best.

I’ll be honest, Argentines have struggled in the premiership in recent years, Veron being the biggest culprit. Their was Marinelli of Middlesborough who was heralded as the new maradona but hardly played and Scaloni has been dodgy for West Ham but then again thats hardly surprising.

You get the feeling the tide is turning because Heinze has been exceptional for Man Utd, Julio Arca has won a move to middlesborough after being the best player Sunderland had on their books, Paletta is being showboated by Benitez as the future star of Argentina.

Hopefully Sorin, Riquelme, Mascherano, Tevez will join soon to show Argentina can handle the Premeirship. More will arrive, no doubt about that.

Someone should do a spreadsheet of all the arg. players, and what league and country they play. It would be interesting to see who is the most successful.

The fact that Arg and Brazil are always so excellent has always impressed me, even more than the obvious reasons of their homegrown talent, but also because their elite players have always had to break into a european system that is, in many cases, quite foreign to them. And then they have to go back to their original ways whilst in their national team. The euro national teams don’t have that problem at all. Their system is their system. I always think they should play better than they actually do because of this.

Crespo did pretty well with Chelsea. Tevez and mascherano will doubtlessly be headed to Chelsea, and I can see both players succeeding there without much hassle.

I don’t know about Roman at man ud. It seems like such a place of egos (forgive me if anyone is a fan of the team) - I call it the dallas cowboys of soccer (spoken by a redskins fan). I just see Roman shrinking away from all that. As an artist he needs to be comfortable and happy to do well. He’s nit one of those guys that thrives off friction. And it’s a pacy league.

Bolton is in the Premiership right? I’ve never heard of them, How do u guys know Riq is on the move? i thought he was happy at Villa. I can’t really see Riq at Man U either…seems like the wrong fit with all the super egos in the club.

Alexa, do u know what other leagues they show regularly on Fox sports world? i’m curious, ‘cos i want to start following some of the european and maybe even the SA leagues, which i have’nt done in years to be honest. Its funny, any time i turn on the channel, they’re always showing rugby or aussie rules football. I guess most of the seasons have’nt started yet though.

I am a fan of Watford. You cnat help but follow the team in the town you are born in despite the fact they play dreadful football.

Raphael is right about Marinelli poor kid was misused couldnt settle in to the unique culture of the north east & effectively killed his promising career.

Sorin is making a mistake going to Bolton. They play kick & rush football with very little finesse. How Saviola could fit in there is a mistake.

As I have said the guys agent needs to see whats best for Saviolas career not his bank balance. He should try for Porto.

About the rivalry England Argentina most English fans hate Argentina prefer to call them animals from the 66 quarter final where Rattin was unfairly sent off (home decision) & of course go ballistic about the hand of God.

However there is a grudging respect deep down of the abilities of Argentina though no one likes them here when compared to Brazil who are seen as the masters of the game.

But when it comes to club rivalries all of this is forgotten. True Veron was a flop but he came just for the money.Hes a lazy selfish mouthy indiviual who sadly was given a star role in 98 & failed as expected.

Take a club like Tottenham & the fans still revere Ardiles & Villa.

Figueroa had a disaster at Birmingham which just goes to exemplify a player must make the right move not on the basis of financial calculation but football benefit.Figueroa is staying at Boca I cant see him going to Genoa as Villareal have his European rights & intend to call him over in 2007/8 season.

I can start a list of players club by club:

Aletico de Madrid
Galletti 26 attacking wing/MF
Ibagaza 29 central MF
Maxi 25 attacking MF
Aguero 18 striker
Franco 29 goalkeeper

Celta Vigo
G.Lopez 33 midfielder
Placente 29 full back
Mendez 29 defense midfielder
Lequi 25 defense midfielder

Espanyol
Zabaleta 21 defense midfielder
Paz 31 defender

Deportivo La Coruna
Colocinni 24 centre back
Duscher 27 midfielder

Valencia
Ayala 33 defender
Aimar 26 attack midfielder

Villareal
Sorin 30 full back
Riquelme 27 attack midfielder
Rodriguez 22 centre back
Arrubarena31 defender
Barbosa 22 goalkeeper

Barcelona
Messi 18 attack midfielder
Saviola 24 shadow striker

Real Zaragoza
Milito.G 26 defender
Milito.D 27 striker
Alessandro25 attack midfielder
Ponzio 25 defender

Cadiz
Pavoni 26 midfielder
Lobos 25 striker
Vella 25 defender
Limia 31 goalkeeper

Getafe
el Pato 33 goalkeeper
Licht 25 full back

Most of these players hold dual passports Italian or Spanish to count as non foreigners.

Oh shit. I thought he was going to be the assistant coach of Basile. I wrote too fast! He seems to be criticizing Grondona because Basile is still Boca’s coach. Am i right?

Aurelius,

The number of players below the age of 25 on your list is not high. How many of them can we see playing in 2010?

First of all - leave Riquelme out of this. I’ve read a few of you bitch and moan, about him being too slow etc. The man is a genius. Yes you put a team with good players around Riquelme and he can outshine Ronaldinho. Where was Ronaldinho this WC? Where was Zidane this WC? It was a masterful display against Brazil, and the rest of the tournament he was mediocre at best.

Secondly, Riquelme didn’t cost us anything. It was Pekerman. See how Argentina just disintegrated when he subbed Riquelme? If you don’t see that you’re a moron. Furthermore his passing ability, his movement when on the ball, set-pieces - he’s unstoppable. Its IMPOSSIBLE to get Riquelme off the ball. He’s sublime. Maradona was quick, Ortega was quick, Veron was a FUCKIN’ joke. Riquelme although not quick was more consistent and definitely outshines Ortega and Veron in every aspect. Thats that.

Maxi,
He is mad becuz Grondona wants a headcoach now and refuses to have an interim coach. Maradona wants Basiles to stay until the end of the year, since Basiles had just signed a two year ct with Boca before or during the world cup.

Nice video ..Obviously is from Napoli in 1989-90 and not from the national team, since Filio Careca (who passes in front of Diego in the video) is a Brasilian ;-)

Thank you Jason.

Could someone explain me why River is selling Figueroa?

And why only Zaragoza wants Aimar? He’s an artist!

Football is ruined by managers and companies. So boring.

oilerfan - I know that FoxSports World shows the primiership, some bundisliga games, and the Argentina league. I think that they might have a contract with ACMilan, because they show some of those games as well. I think foxsports also broadcasts Serie A, but they always seem to be the most boring games possible, grim 0 to 0 snoozefests. They showed the UEFA cup final this year.

They never seem to show the real big primership games, however. Those end up on pay per view? I’m not sure. There was a lot of wigan, or whatever that team is called, and not that much Chelsea, for example.

Espn espanol gets la liga. They also do the copa libertadores. Telmundo has been showing some la liga games also. They recently showed the Villarreal/Maribor game. Espn 2 broadcasts the champions league final (I don’t know about the semifinals).

Does anyone know how to watch champions leaque games in the us?

thanks for the lists Alexa and Aurelius. Much easier that googling, lol. Its hard to follow all the teams w/ argentinians in them, but i’m for sure gonna try and follow Barca, villareal, and atletico.
thanks also for the info on fox sports Alexa. I wonder if they show live matches though, it seems like they’re usually pre-recorded, which really sucks. I think i heard last week that they’ll be showing some of the Barcalona friendlies in the USA if anyone’s interested.

fab, in Canada, i dont know what other channels show football, but i know we get fox sports world which does show plenty of matches and some of the Argentina league (see Alexa’s post above). Is gol tv on satellite too? i’ve heard of it before, but never watched the channel.

You know what i need to do, learn spanish!! lol, it would make my argentina-supporting life so much easier!!
