Argentina to host COPA AMERICA.

February 15th, 2007 | By: Messay Getahun | 318 Comments »

NO, THE TITLE ISNT WRONG.

Lots of news yesterday, regarding our National Team.

First, Argentina to play Colombia, Paraguay and USA in the Copa America that will be hosted in Venezuela. Our first game will be against USA on june 28th. This game will be shown on ESPN. Great chance for us to be shown on a national network here in the us.

I like our draw and we should advance from this group, but it wont be as easy as it looks. I am thankful however, we were not drawn in the Group of B.
That is the group of death in my opinion. Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador & Chile.

SECONDLY

Argentina will host the COPA AMERICA in 2011. Last time the copa was played in Argentina was in 1987. Shockingly Uruguay won it.

U-20 Worldcup will also be held this summer.

We will get to see both our senior team and our youth team during this summer. Exciting.

My only concern is inregards to player such as, Aguero, Messi, Higuain, and gago.

Messi has confessed his desire to play for both the u20 and the Senior NT team. It is awesome to see his comitment to the NT both to the youth level and the senior level. I love Messi. At the same time I dont know if i want Messi to play in the u20. There is anything he will gain from it. He is above that level. He is a top 10 player in the world if not a top 5.

Aguero - I think it might actually be good for Aguero and Higuain to play in the U20. This will give them some time to get accustomed to one another . Also, it will give them some experience on what it feels like to play for the NT. Specially to Higuain since he opted to play for the youth team in the past. Aguero played in 05, but not much.

Gago, I dont think he needs to play in the u20 either. He might not even be qualified to play.

Either way. It should be fine.

I hope basile calls players that he believes has a shot at making the 2010 WC. I hope he calls players that he knows will give him the best chance of winning this tournament. We must win it. We need to restore a winning Mentality. We could no longer afford to say, we played great, but we lost. We must play to WIN. just as we did against France.

Vamos Argentina.

cienciao,
good luck on getting these guys to understand you!! sure argentina has a good, a great soccer tradition as does italy, germany, spain and other countries but brazil is on a league of its own, no other country can claim the superior skills of brazil whether it is because it has a large population base or whatever the reason but brazil is a factory of players of the highest caliber. unfortunately these guys take this as an offense instead of a mere reality but heck, they can relish their only glory named maradona while brazilians can relish garrincha, vava, pele, rivelino, zico, ronaldo, ronaldinho and soon it will be robinho, kaka and there are thousands of youngsters ready to take over…..

Mr. Al,
you are back. welcome!
You made a good point above except that Ronaldo is FAT and Ronaldinho is also FAT, and they are no longer fabulous. That is they are FAT,not FAB. Got it Mr. Old timer who continues to live in the past!

I didn’t know people last forever!! bring back d’stephano!! ronaldo’s best days are perhaps behind him but he is still a prime player. ronaldinho is yet to peak and I think he will go to italy and have a great second run probably with kaka and ronaldo. anyways that’s the beauty of brazil’s soccer factory that just when these guys are making news there is pato, nilmar and many others coming up strong while argentina has what? messi? as I said for each argentinian good player brazil produces ten so take it easy and rememeber that resistance is futile!!

Mr. Al,

It is not about “people lasting for ever”. It is about success, money and could be culture also. Very few footballers can last for a long time, Zidane is an example.

Mr. Al, let me reiterate to you that I am not argentinean. But whenever I see greatness I give it due recognition. I have nothing against Brazil players. What I am telling is just an OBSERVATION. Remember that I always stand corrected.

Again Brazilian must produce more soccer players because their population ratio compare to Argentina is much higher. This is simple common sense; I am surprised that as a lawyer who has visited 20 countries, practising international law did realize this simple fact.

Mr. Al, my intent is always to learn. I concur with you that in general Brazilians have made a name in football due to their past. Why do think they do not succeed in mass numbers in Premier league? Is that because Premier league is too fast pace? Is it culture? Hope to hear from you soon Mr. AL.

so china should be the next soccer superpower with 1 billion in population? studies have been made to explain why brazil generates so many great soccer players and some people even refer to the genetic mix of african slaves and europeans, others to the way brazil soccer is structured who knows? the point is that brazil has a presence all over the world!!

I find it amusing that you mention that brazilians don’t succeed in large numbers overseas when you could put three distinct national with players playing in europe alone!!

donhi, rafinha, naldo, edu, leo, favio, taddei, nene, mancini, alfonso, ilan for example is a national team with players that you will not see in dunga’s team!! and if we look at the players playing in brazil…..nevermind.

my contention is not that argentina sucks, they are a good and sometimes even a great team but I laugh at comparisons with brazil because there cannot be any. plain and simple.

I may like sugar ray leonard, oscar de la hoya but there was only one ali. the existence of ali as the greatest boxer ever does not mean that other boxers aren’t great. the same thing happens here in soccer: brazil is the greatest soccer country ever but there are other great countries which simply cannot touch brazils past, present and quite likely future records. there is a reason why they have been to every worldcup and won five cups.

Mr. Al
China has never tried at football. Football is not their passion or national past time. Only recently Chelsea is creating a link with China.

Another example is that of Canada. Their favorite past time is Hockey; so even if you increase the population, it will not make a difference.

Similarly, in the US, Pele and George Best went there; it did not work out because Americans like American Football and Baseball better.

In contrast, both Argentina and Brasil are EXTREMELY passionate about soccer and one them has a bigger population ratio. So the one with the higher population ratio is bound to produce more players and should even be better given its heritage and tradition. Please do not get me wrong. I believe that Pele was the greatest at one point as a team player. So young brazilian can look up to that and be aspired to do the same.

If in the world cup 2006, Brasil was playing according to their tradition, I would have supported them. They did not and also they did NOT win the wc 2006. I prefer Argentina because they are TRYING to play the way Brasil used to play; Have you not noticed that many of us who support Argentina are not even from Argentina; there is something appealing with their football? As a Brazilian were you please the way Ronaldo played? Do you think he should have even played given the number of talent Brasil has?

With you reference to Boxing, it has never appealed to me because it is not a “BEAUTIFUL” sport like football or soccer is. With regards to Ali, does he has Parkinson? Is that the result of those blows he sustained while he was number one in the world?

With regards to your other comments about Brasil being the greatest soccer country, WC 2006 proves that it may be in decline. It was certainly not the best. FIFA likes it because it has commercial appeal. Recently, even FIFA dethroned Brasil from the number one ranking based on the way Brasil is playing.

Regarding the future, it remains to be seen whether Brasil will win the next WC20010, COPA America. What is certain is that given their past record of winners of 5 WC, they will be favourites.
Mr. Al, I hope we will continue our converstion. May God bless.

ken, irony is the word. I understand that china does not pursue soccer but I was trying to contrast the madness in claiming that brazil is good merely because of a larger population. ditto for the boxing reference.
remember that I am not brazilian and to be quite frank I have not seen true soccer spirit in the traditional teams for some time now, since money took over. the africans play with heart but the prima-donnas who are today’s soccer stars make me sick.

it is nice for you to admit that argentina is trying to play the brazilian way because that is the point: brazil is the mold the world of soccers looks up to.

I meant Brazilian fan, not just Brazilian in the above. I accidentally left out the “fan”.
After all the discussion we had, where some people even use expletives against you, it appears that we think the same way. May God bless.

If you are not Argentinian, then where you from? Most of you claim that you’re not Argentinians, then what are you guys.

One thing Argentinians are different from us (Brazilians), you guys are too fanatic, excessively compulsive fanatic. Always on the lookout for some great news about their players, trying to single them out by comparing them with Brazilian players. Brazil will always be Brazil, and no one will take that away from us. And someone in this board mentioned that the glory of Brazil is ending. Please for God’s sake, since when?

Last time Ronaldinho was playing, the Spanish comentators were discussing that controversial dispute because even they disagree. But I do admit that Messi, boy, he is damned too slow. But I understand he was injured, but it will be very hard for him to catch up at the level he was before.

How often do you hear us (Brazilians) brag about our players, or thinking that we are better then the rest of the world. I do believed that we are at least more humble, while Argentinians, are more arrogant and have too much pride. And, I agree with you Al, Brazil is the daddy of the South America. I’ll make sure I take care of them if needed.

Cienciao, I think you should see this youtube video about predicting that Brasil will be knocked off in WC 2006 which actually happen. I do not know your background but suggest that you take a class in logic at university level. This will teach you the difference between fact and fiction. For example the greatness of Brasil in the past was not duplicated in 2006WC. Did you get it?

P.S FYI I am not from either Brasil or Argentina.

ing, you are correct and I would expect that at some point in the future brazil may even miss a worldcup and perhaps that would be great as it could bring out the best of brazil. soccer is a huge business and with money comes corruption and many other forces that take away from the national teams of brazil but make no mistake, brazil is a serious soccer factory and that is something that is not likely to be replicated by any other country. brazil could put what, four or five national teams with no problem? the problem with being brazil also is that everybody is always expecting total brazilian dominance and sometimes the team although made out of great players does not come together as it was the case in 2006 when the players seem more concerned with ronaldo and cafu’s records than anything else.

Mr. Al,

Your posting above is one of the most honest coming from you. I agree with you. Beside what you stated above, we must also add that Football is a source of economic power in both Brasil and Argentina given that they are both third world countries. There are many examples where a kid can make it in
life only if he excells in soccer. This is also a driving force. How many great soccer players do we know in the world that were born with a silver spoon? Relatively speaking there are very few.

Put your personally feelings on a side man and see the reality. What you think that Argentina is now the dominant country in footbal, and that Brazil second behind you guys? Please give me a break man. I truly agree with you Al. Now, just because we lost against France in the World Cup 2006 it doesn’t necessarily means that France is better than Brazil, and that Brazil is out of the map. I truly believed that France took the opportunity over Brazil, and we lost it. But nevertheless, we are still the top contender. As much as you hate to believed, Brazil will always be above Argentina. When was the last time Argentina won a World Cup even with all of this players you guys brag all the time?

Cienciao,
I did not say Brasil is second to Argentina. According to the latest FIFA classification, Brasil is no longer the number one! I agree Brasil is still the top contender but this does not guarantee that they will be the winner. I hope they win Copa America which should make you happier. Cheers

what if argentina wins the worldcup?

argentina would go crazy!! great celebration that would last for a decade in their minds!! argentinians still cherish the maradona team that won the cup…..but what happens when brazil wins the cup? brazilians celebrate and within months they start looking forward to the next one. this underlines the difference between these two countries. brazil has so much to offer than the world and brazilians themselves expect their team to win at all times!!
what is the new “thing” in brazil right now? everybody is waiting to celebrate teh 1,000 by romario. while other countries top players would be happy to have won a couple of big tournaments and goal scoring trophies brazilians are again looking at a great feat that separates romario in this case from any other scorer of the time. brazil is used to greatness and that is a profound difference guys. look at the world awards and you’ll find a host of brazilians all around the world and times. I repeat what I have said time and time again: for each argentinian player that is great brazil has produced ten!! population or no population is irrelevant.

Mr. Al,

May be you can help me here. A number of bloggers want Galazo, but he only represents PURE MEDIOCRITY;

I really feel bad because I believe that a person of the caliber of Ken may never contribute again . I feel it is my mistakes because I was trying to bring back Galazo, an idiot born of immigrants who probably have achieved nothing on his own just like our old Jason….

Hey Al,

Take it easy amigo, we’re only talking about futbol here. Why are you so down against gaucho futbol, it’s probably because you can’t handle the truth, because, both on paper and on the field Argentine players and teams have and still are better than Brasil, and here’s why.
First of all, Maradona was many times voted the best futbol player in the history of the game (the only reason why Pele has been placed on top sometimes is only because of Maradona’s off field problems, and you know that). Maradona was and always will be the most naturally gifted futbol player of all times, and believe it or not, Argentine (River Plate to Real Madrid) great Alfredo Di Stefano was even a more skilled player than Pele on the field, and that was by many expert’s opinions. There’s no doubt that Pele was and always will be a great player, but he had a great cast around him to make him look even better help him achieve that greatness, like Garrincha, which I and many believed to be a more skilled player than Pele, it’s just that Pele got all the glory because he got to finish the beautiful setups by his teamates(I have many full vintage WC games/footage, and old Santos FC games and training films showing Pele to prove it)Believe me, individually, Pele was no match to the great Maradona, but I know you’ll never buy that, and you’ll call me and my Argentina bad names after you read all this truth, but that’s OK, I can handle it.

As far as the teams go, Argentina, with less than one sixth the population of Brasil, has many more futbol titles than Brasil, just look at the tournament stats.
First, I’m sure you read Riquelme’s tournament stats, and I’ll add the following:
Argentina has actually won 15 Copa Americas to Brasil’s 7, and 9 Intercontinental cups by 6 different teams compared to Brasil’s 6 by 4 different teams, and more than anyone else for that matter.
Did Riquelme also mention that Argentina’s U19 teams have won 5 world titles compared to Brasil’s 4.
Anyway, for what it’s worth, there it is. The truth happened on many futbol fields and is now in the history books, and no one can change that, not even you with your bad feelings and words. No matter what you say, it won’t change the facts !
OK, now it’s your turn to lower yourself again and say bad meaningless words about me and my Agentina, but as I said earlier, that’s OK, I can take it because I and everyone else knows what the truth is and always will be.

You bet I’m proud, ….. Al !

Argentina, Argentina !!!

PS/FYI, especially to AL
et all,

Here’s a few more facts/stats that I forgot to mention regarding the Argentina vs Brasil and Maradona vs Pele debate ?

Argentina vs Brasil con’t:

1. Official games between these two giants: After 71 games
Arg won 29
Bra won 26
Ties 16
Note: Most goals scored in any one match was by Arg in which they beat Brasil 6 to 1 on 05/03/1940

2. Copa America - Already stated on my last comment.
Arg 15 titles
Bra 7 titles

3. Principal or major continental tournaments of between Clubs:

Arg 55 titles
Bra 36 titles

Example:
a) Copa Libertadores
After 47 tourneys:

Arg 20 titles
Bra 13 titles

b) Copa Intercontinental -
already mentioned.

After 43 tourneys:

Arg 9 titles
Bra 6 titles

c) Copa Sudamericana
After 4 editions

Arg 3 titles
Bra 0 titles

d) Recopa Sudamericana
After 13 tourneys

Arg 4 titles
Bra 4 titles

e) Copa Interamericana
After 18 tourneys

Arg 7 titles
Bra 0 titles

f) Supercopa “Joao Havalenge”
After 10 tourneys

Arg 6 titles
Bra 3 titles

Maradona vs Pele con’t:

This topic is obviously very subjective, therefore FIFA consulted DTs from all around the world, x-players, news/sports editors, andthe general futbol fan public, and what they found out was this:
The overall vote via internet voting, overwhelmingly, and by a grand majority went to Maradona.
So there are the facts, you all decide now.

To tell you the truth, I love them both, Argentina and Brasil.
They’re both great and always will be be world “futbol superpowers”.
Since I’m from Argentina, I’ll always go with Argentina, but my second place vote has always gone to Brasil followed by Uruguay.

Obviously, this Argentina vs Brasil debate will never end so I’ll end by saying that my final overall vote goes to South American futbol !

Vamos Muchachos !!!!
