i didnt get to watch the game live as i was in the middle of no where pennsylvania doing some coaching making some money in a place where no cell phones work but i did get to listen to the game on satellite radio on the ride home and from what i have heard it was another clinic by argentina just a matter of time until we scored but from what we heard me and my buddy only heard diego militos name a handful of times i am guessing he was lost again and we were talking why tevez isnt in and how he saved west ham after a coach got fired by not using him and about to be relegated…AND than El Apache comes in at half time and 3 out of the 4 goals he was involved in.. I heard Riquelme made one of his Godly passes again and messi finally broke loose of the fouls…fill me in i dont feel like goin through the 2000 something comments on the last post..Here comes argentina mexico the Rematch of the best game of the world cup…

Golazo is spot on. Mexico would be the far tougher opponents. They have a couple of starlets in their side.
I have may posted this link before but its worth another look from a dcoumentary aired a few years ago on satellite TV.
Aside from the focus on the Boca River rivalry it highlights some of the links in the Argentinian pysche to football & the emphasis on mastery of the ball, the gambetta & tango & the style that has thus emerged.
As skywalker points out watch the little bits where the youngsters are training. Ball control first & foremost.
Basile is just implementing the tactics invented by the maquina of the 40s & legends like Loustau & Pedernera which were assidiously copied & studied by the Mighty Magyars & added to by the Dutch.
Everyone works from back to front & vice versa, everyone moves continually( Milito is far too static for my liking). Coco has done a very good job thus far as in 1993 & would have done in 1994 having thankfully replaced Bilardo.
Shame about 1994. Redondo was a absolute standout & tireless & if not for FIFAs machinations Maradona I’m sure would have led Argentina further forward.
Good move for Ustari. He should get plenty of work behind the Getafe back line which can only be good for improving him. He should oust Garcia fairly easily & Pato may follow fellow Argentine Licht out of the door.

Look at Riquelme’s first goal.
See how the peruvian defensive line is collapsing as Roman moves left.
An average forward will eventually break to his right (and into the defenders) just to favor his right foot.
Riquelme is so beyond all that…
That cannon-ball came out of his “bad” foot the way the play dictated. Genius.

Thanks for the link. It looks like the u 20 play on the 12th. I would bet on Spain, USA. Argentina or Mexico winning the tournament. I am sure that Spain is not to happy about winning their group and getting Brasil as a reward. It is true that brasil have a lot of talent but the players seem to be playing for a big contract and not for the team. I am hoping for a USA vs Argentina final. You have to understand that when I started playing soccer 32 years ago in the USA it was unthinkable that we would have so much young talent here. The future is bright. i only can hope that the USA soccer style is more influenced by the Americas than Europe.

I cant’s wait to see Brazil beat the hell out of Uruguay, and watch out Argentina, hold on tight to that seat on Wednesday because Mexico is the same as Paraguay, Peru, or Colombia, like you are used to play. We haven’t forgot the last game at the WorldCup, and many reporters from Argentina already posted “La Revancha.” Mexico is not going to be scared to play Argentina after what happened at the World Cup, but remember we didn’t had an individual forward as we now have like Neri Castillo, and I am sure he has brought so many attention but he will break you defense, that’s for sure. Any one in here wants to post what’s going to be the score on that day. I say 4:2 in favor of Mexico. One thing we got that not many teams have is the best goalies. Not just one but two of them Osvaldo Sanchez and Guille Ochoa, and definitely a very strong defense, like always.
Good luck Argentina, because Mexico will be playing with anger on that day!!!

> i only can hope that the USA soccer style is more influenced by the Americas than Europe.
You are in for a disappointment. For whatever reason, the english style (ranked 2nd after German style in my book of worst mainstream soccer styles) seems to be the most prevelant in USA. Maybe UK is more culturally acceptable to USA so FSC does a good job of giving more importance to obscure worthless soccer news from UK then to anything South American. That way, it gets harder for USA to gain any respect as a soccer power in the future. I believe USA is big enough and capable enough to develop their own brand of soccer (taking the best lessons from South America
and Europe but unfortunately the state of coaching in USA is quite lame).

Ruben…..do you think Argentina is going to be scared of Mexico??? Cmon man. Neri is a great player - I give him credit cos the guy is the best team in the Mexican squad. Yet after that you have no one on that squad that is as good as him.
Let me give you a prediction….Coco Basile is going to have el Jefecito Mascherano cover Neri all over the pitch - so Castillo will have to work hard to get a anything.
I truly doubt Mexico will pull the upset.
Argentina 3 Mexico 1

Ruben,
Nery Castillo will get shut down by Ayala and Zanetti.
He still the best player Mexico has but Compare him with Messi who is 4 years younger the him you can’t there is no comparison Messi is so much more better then him.
Tevez will probably start and the Mexican defense can’t hold Tevez Messi and Riquelme.
When you look at the squads
Mexico has absultely nothing on Argentina. Argentina has a better defense and midfield then Mexico.
And when it comes to the Attackers. No other nation has a better Attacking force then us.
Your keppers are a joke.
Final Score will be Argentina 3 Mexico 1

Nery Castillo is in question for the game against Argentina.
He has a hyperextension in his knee.

When teams play with anger they usually lose and there is not a country on this earth that Argentina is a afraid of.

ALBO i know none of us doubt him but for some reason every team he goes too the coach thinks hes a sub …example at west ham..basile is great but i dont care if the guy is 3 foot 2 if he produces more than peter Crouch he should be in..

I am sure that Mexico could beat Argentina but would guess that if they played ten times Argentina would win 8. Mexico has played well in this tournament but I think that if you cant beat the USA team A you are not going to beat the Argentina team A. Argentina is playing the best soccer in the world right now with the most talent of any team in the world so I am not to afraid of a Mexico team set on revenge. Dont forget Messi will be starting this game not coming off the bench :).

My prediction 4 to 1 if mexico attacks if not 2 to 0.

I hear you Kris.
And I’m sure right now Basile is thinking about it.
Carlitos Tevez brings life to the team.
We all can see it.
But I think it’s also worth to note that the system that works for the albiceleste tends to pay off later in the second half. (Look at our stats)
In my view, every team that plays Argentina starts locked in a defensive mode that is truly hard to penetrate.
Our guys go then to work, one touch passes across the midfield and the opponent starts running after the ball. Then they pay the toll after 60 to 70 minutes of running.
There is a job of patience our players have to play first, possession and patience.
It might be one more reason why Basile brings Carlitos and Aimar in on the second half.

One of my favorite things about the Copa America in the past was that there was always some great new find of a player that no one knows and who takes the tournament by storm. I didn’t think that this was possible anymore, but Nery Castillo has proved me wrong. What a great find for Mexico.
But he’s still very unproven. I just think that if he does play, the defenders for Arg will handle him (he will be BLACK and BLUE by the end of the game). Also, Mascherano managed to shut down the likes of KAKA in the Champions League final. He’ll be all over any attack.
Mexico will be very very difficult, but the WC game is so long ago, and so much has changed since then. Remember how well Arg played once Peckerman put Aimar , Messi, and Tevez in with Riquelme? But Peckerman only put those guys in at the end of the game. Mexico will have to deal with the 4 together for at least a half.
Albo — I have to say I love how you say “our” team, knowing that most of the people who post here are not Argentine. But we all suffer for the team just the same!

Alexa, my dear ecuatoriana friend,
Thanks again for your sweet words,
but I must say that the degree of love and passion for the NT of my country that I have seen expressed on this blog by people from all continents of the planet, literally humbles me to a point of perplexity.
And I pray that if the time comes to lose, our boys will do it with the same class they show when they play the game.
It’s been a very long time since I had fun watching Argentina.
I think they are close to playing the beautiful game.
This team is yours too, Alexa and everyone else’s (but the troll)
You’ve earned it… ![]()

Albo - such lovely words. . .
I’ll have to rely on you (and all the other great posters who are around during the game) to be strong on Wednesday, because, I tell you, I’m going to be a puddle of nerves.

Nery Castillo is actually the son Uruguayan parents - he was born in Mexico and raised later in Uruguay. His debut was for Danubio of Uruguay.
Uruguay called him for the Under 20 team but cut him for some reason. Yet he took a few years to decide if he wanted to represent Uruguay, Mexico or even Greece where he was offered lots of $$ to get a Greece citizenship to play for them.
Recently he decided on Mexico.
