A Great Send-Off for Germany

May 25th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 24 Comments »

As was posted in the comments on the blog, there was a game Wednesday between the national side and the U20 team in front of 60,000 people at Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. Hernan Crespo and Leandro Cufre were the only players not to see action. Lionel Messi played a few minutes in the second half.

Rodrigo Palacios scored three goals and Javier Saviola notched the other.

I loved a few of the quotes following he game.

“The most important thing this evening was the support and encouragement we got from the crowd,” said Crespo.

And this one from Pekerman: “We will always remember this night. It’s going to be a huge help for us when we get to Germany.”

Next up is some training in Italy before the team faces Angola on May 30. It is starting to get really close, folks.

If that doesn’t work you can go directly to the youtube.com and view it by following this link:

Great news!!The only thing that worries me is Messi`s injury. I hear that he played some minutes and looked ok. That is nice. But I read an interview with Pekerman somewhere(can`t remember where)before the game where he said that Messi had again felt some pain during training. This really makes me so nervous. Messi is so young and eager to get back, I am afraid he will do “to much” and end up making the injury worse. Pekerman even said in an interview that it was hasty to say that Messi would play against Angola. I am so sick of this fucking injury! Why can`t he get well?

Found the interview now. It was on fifa.com. This is what Pekerman said after the game(not before as I said above):”Messi had been in doubt until this (Wednesday) morning because his pulled muscle has been playing up. Luckily, we saw he looked good and he even surprised us with some movements.”
What does “his muscle has been playing up mean”? Sorry guys, I know I am way to pessimistic on this, but I am just so afraid anything will detroy the World Cup for my favourite player.

Hello Rune,
I am also worrying about Messi… the issue is we are more afraid that we would miss watching him play than the effect of his absance on the team’s performance. The team can manage very well (i believe) without him and the worst case sinareo (injury), he will play 30 min each game. in fact, that is more than enough for the fans and for him to make an effect on the game. would that make you worry less?
ciao

Who will win the WC ?????
It’s Hard to say that Argentina has less chances to win this WC compared with Brazil, this is the truth we have to say it, it’s also hard to say that the WC winner will be an European country once the tournament organized in Europe( the hosts Germany- Nederland-Italy-and maybe UK) have great chances to win along with Brazil.
as we see in each WC there is a team which makes a great surprise to reach the semi final ( like Turkey in 2002-Coratia in 98 -Bulgaria 94) - so this time hopefully not be ( Serbia) - then i can say it’s maybe (Czech- Croatia -Sweden and Poland)
Nederland will be surely qualified who will be the second team?
Argentina has to win the first 2 matches NO WAY if they want to qualify

Actually Farshad, I don`t think Argentina will do very well without Messi. Maxi will play if Messi isn`t fit and he is not as good as Messi at all. Messi and Tevez are the only players we have who can do unexpected things on the field. They can really make a difference on the highest level. Without any of them, I predict a mediocre World Cup for Argentina. Sadly.

I’m in the US but will be going to Germany to follow Argentina. Any locals know of any good restaurants where one could get empanadas and a nice asado?
