2007: Your Thoughts

December 26th, 2007 | By: Christian | 12 Comments »

First, I want to wish everyone a safe and happy new year, and I hope you’re all enjoying the holiday season.

In looking back on the year that was 2007, what did you feel were the highs and lows in Argentine football? What was the best game you saw? Player? On the other end, who or what broke your heart? Finally, what do you look forward to seeing most in 2008? I’ll post my own answers tomorrow, but here are some topics you can use as a starting point, either at the club or national level:

* Best Game
* Worst or Most Disappointing Game
* Best Individual Performance
* Best Goal
* Breakout Player Award

And for 2008:
* Predict What the Biggest Storyline Will Be
* Who Will Be the Next Big Player from Argentina
* Which Player Will Have the Most Impact

Feel free to discuss any other topic you want. Have fun.

Goog topic. I don’t think it’s fair on the others if I go first. So sharpen your holiday crayons and blog away.

Best game: not sure if I can pin-point one in particular– I’ll have to think about this further. For now, I will say that, for me, the U-20 World Cup run was the most inspiring, promising display by the future of the national team. It was a breath of fresh air, especially after such a disastrous end to the Copa America, to see the young Albicelestes showcasing their talents.

I also want to say that despite the tragic end of the Copa America, losing at the hands of ugly football, I still felt immensely proud of the team. They played inspiring, beautiful football.

2006 best individual performance: another tough choice. So many to choose from. There’s TEVEZ who single-handedly saved West Ham from relegation. Then there’s MESSI who scored some astonishingly great goals & troubled defences in his own menacing way. Credit also to ABBONDANZIERI who won Liga’s Zamora award, for best goal-keeper, too. ZANETTI for proving why it was a mistake to exclude him from the World Cup– a world class player & gentleman in his own right. CAMBIASSO for his hard-work in Inter’s Scudetto run. Not to be forgotten is AGUERO, who had an incredible U-20 World Cup and a good run of form in the early part of Liga.

Breakout Player– Lots of names to choose from, I think I’ll go with LAVEZZI who has turned quite a few heads with his striking abilities at Napoli.

You can’t talk about 2006 without mentioning LANUS– they won their first ever Apertura this year.

Players to look out for in 2008– my list:
-GARAY, proving to be a very efficient defender at Racing (overlook his recent red at Sevilla!)

-Despite their current poor run, DIEGO MILITO continues to score goals. Definitely a top candidate for Pichichi in my book.

-BANEGA– promising talent it’s only a matter of time that he makes a move to Europe.

-BELLUSCHI, talented playmaker finally in Europe (Olympiakos).

-DI MARIA at Benfica. I wish I could see Portuguese Superliga to keep track of his career over there. Ah well.

Saludos.

Just one quick and simple rule. No more references to ugly football, which only losers use. It reflects very poorly on all of us.

* Best Game
Argentina’s games on Copa America. Wow, that was great stuff.

* Worst or Most Disappointing Game
Brazil x Argentina on the Copa America final. This game was a world tragedy for football just like Brazil’s defeat to Italy in 1982. Argentina didn’t play well but Brazil was a real shame, doing ANTI-GAME tactics in order to win. A real shame.

* Best Individual Performance
Riquelme on Copa America.

* Best Goal
Messi - yes, THAT one.

* Breakout Player Award
Riquelme.

And for 2008:
* Predict What the Biggest Storyline Will Be
Riquelme will be chosen best player in the world. Ronaldinho will be close on second place.

* Who Will Be the Next Big Player from Argentina
Aguero?

* Which Player Will Have the Most Impact
Kaká. He will disappear. Everybody will realize that he is a fake.

Ok. I must confess that I am not Brazilian but an Argentinian who is so green with envy that I must pass myself by Brazilian so as to vent my venom without making it obvious that I am just a boludo who wants to be Brazilian!! Sorry Kaka, you are awesome and I couldn’t take it any longer. I will go back to my room and whip meself.

best argentine game: first game of the copa america against u.s.a. i particularly loved the second half of that game, when aimar came in the second half every thing changed and we starting playing more up tempo football then the goals came flowing.
best argetine player: messi, he has become the living legend of argetine football who we have been waiting for, for so long. in my opinion not since batistuta had we had such an inspirational player.
the worst game: copa america final i don’teven want to talk about that.
best individual performance: messi in a 3-3 draw to real madrid.
best goal: messi against getafe
break out player: messi once again, this guy is unbelievable.
biggest story line: dinho will move to either milan or chelsea making messi the most dominant player at barcelona.
the next big impact player: banega
player to have the most impact: sergio aguero

Best Game Barcelona vs Real Madrid It had it all!
* Worst or Most Disappointing Game You know :(
* Best Individual Performance Riquelme Copa Libertadores Final.
* Best Goal Messi Getafe Messi Mexico Messi Messi Messi
* Breakout Player Award Messi

And for 2008:

* Predict What the Biggest Storyline Will Be Messi leads barcelona to Champions League win and Argentina to Gold Medal and wins player of year.

* Who Will Be the Next Big Player from Argentina Di Maria
* Which Player Will Have the Most Impact Messi

If messi gets healed and stays fit is there any doubt of what he will do? Barcelona dont lose when he plays and is in form they look conpletely different. The national team will have some big wins in the Spring and Messi will lead us to Olympic Gold.

Best game: Under 20 World Cup Final,the never say die attitude shown by the boys, great game. Just about shaded Barca vs Real Madrid for me.
Worst game: Copa America Final, we never turned up and lost to crap.
Best Individual Performance: Messi vs Real Madrid, pure genius.
Best Goal: Messi vs Getafe.
Breakout Player: Sergio Aguero, finally showing Europe what Argentina had already seen.
Biggest storyline for 2008: Argentina win the Olympic Gold, and beat Brazil in the qualifiers. Messi gets Player of the Year and Aguero gets young player of the year.
Next big player from Argentina: Banega.
Which player will have the most impact: Can’t decide between them so both Messi and Aguero.
