This is really sad news.

Captain Riquelme quits Argentina

Riquelme and Argentina lost in the World Cup last eight to Germany
Argentina captain Juan Roman Riquelme has announced his international retirement at the age of just 28.
Riquelme, who skippered the side at the World Cup, said he wanted more time to look after his ill mother and was upset by criticism of his performances.

“I can take criticism but family comes first before soccer,” said Riquelme. “I have no right to make her suffer due to my part in the national team.”

Riquelme won 37 caps and scored eight goals having made his debut in 1997.

He added: “Since the World Cup, my mother has been taken to hospital twice and my responsibility is to take care of her.

“It will hurt me deeply not to wear the Argentina shirt again but my mother’s health comes first.

“My mother is my mother and I can’t compare her with the Argentina shirt or anything else.”

Riquelme will continue to play his club football for Spanish side Villarreal.

I know that Telemundo will broadcast 4 days later.

I wanna watch it live…if there is no channels showing the game, then does anyone know a website or something where we can watch the game??

Thanks Ken. I am sure that Saviola will make the right decision I just would be sad if he plays for a team that does not value what he brings to the game. He has the ability to make things happen and the fact that he is so low key prevents some from seeing that.

“Do you think that Arsene Wenger at Arsenal is also using the “double five ” system you suggested?”

Ken, I know they did until last summer but since Patrick Vieira and Edu left the team I haven’t followed their games much.
I know that Flamini who is a central midfielder has been playing as a full back given the amount of injuries they have.
I would guess that Wenger now sets Gilberto right in front of the line of 4 and in the middle.

President and manager of Barça, Joan Laporta and Txiki Begiristain are in Buenos Aires, ready to watch the River Plate-Boca Juniors match this coming Sunday at Monumental.
And also ready to open their check book for Gago and Palacio. Their third purchase would be Ustari from Independiente.
Just to think I gave them till the end of the year to pack up. How naive of me :-)

Batigol, regarding the broadcast of Argentina vs Spain, try the followinng:
http://freefootballforum.com/forum/index.php

I have also asked them there if anybody know whether our game will be broadcast live.

By the way I have watched a lot of live games through them. If you have questions just ask them. They are very helpful.

ken, agree with you, BARCA isnt after palacio and Gago, they are working a deal with arsenal in argentina and also probably scouting ustari. Gago is believe to have struck a deal withr real madrid as someone else have said here before. He even admitted wanting to go to real. HE SEEMS TO be the perfect replacement of FRENANDO REDONDO at real. i havent seen him play, but heard and seen some clips. he seems pretty legite. what do you guys know about him????

As for the game against spain, I have spent hours searching but no luck. I dont think even gol tv is goint to show it. so i guess i am stuck. unless livefooty shows it.

It seems like ex-River Angel finally adapted himself in England, isn’t it? Baros doesn’t play much at Aston Villa!
Angel was amazing at River. I hope Cavenaghi will progress faster.

Concerning the Riquelme retirement, i believe it’s not that negative… because Roman could be back in 1 or 2 years! We could finally use him as a tool in order to keep the ball for our team, for example if Argentina is leading! Also, Riquelme would have less pressure and would be more confident. Of course, it depends on if he accepts to be substitute sometimes.

Ken, i totally agree with you concerning the beautiful game played during this WC, the Crespo situation at Chelsea (I hate them but Hernan always seemed like a mercenary) and yes, i love Zidane.

Albo, Barca and Real could kill our players. Barca were close to destroy Riquelme, Saviola and Maxi. I’m frightened for Palacio. He would never play. Gago would face competitors like Iniesta, Deco, Xavi. Ridjkaard would probably not give him a chance. Messay is right. Barca come for a keeper and sign Arsenal contracts. Ustari will sit on the bench with his new friends. Go to Atletico, Zaragoza or Villareal guys!

I want to see Gago too! The new Redondo!

The problem with going to chelsea or barc or real is that you could be the fourth best striker in the world and still ride the pine. You could be the third best goalie in the world and hardly play. My point is that if futbol is something that you love then go to a good team that will value your talents and let you use them. These super clubs destroy a lot of players by grabbing them to young and sitting them on the bench or playing them on the second team. Many of these players could be starting for most clubs in Europe. Then you have the issues of coaches favorites and so on. Messi has been very fortunate but even he could end up on the bench and play less minutes with one or two bads games. If you are in your mid twenties and basically done with your developement than go for it and play for a super club. Worse case is you dont play a lot and add a few years on to your carreer by not tearing your body down. But these guys in their early twenties need to make smart decisions that take into account playing time when they choose a club.

Heads up - this weekend FSW is showing the superclasico–Boca/River.

I just read that el burrito is having some serious personal problems, and he will not play, but the game will be great.

Boca is a fantastic team. I don’t see much of a difference between Boca and any other elite billion dollar team in Europe.

Most people don’t talk about Boca in the same breath as Barcelona or Chelsea only because it’s way down South, and because it’s payroll is comparitevly small, but they are just as good.

Just my very subjective opinion.

Also I would like to hear everyones comments on the possible use of the double five that Albo mentioned. The concept was to have both Gago and Mascherano playing at the same time. Albo does this mean you have four defenders and the two defensive mids or three defenders and two defensive mids? I think this could be a good idea. I believe it means you have the three defenders which at this point would be Ayala, Heinze, and Burdisso. These three could change and of course Ayala might not be around for WC 2010. The you put Gago and Mascherano in front of them. Then you can go quite offensive with the ramaining line up. I would right now play Messi at right mid, Aimar in the middle, and Maxi at left. Forwards would be Aguero and Tevez with Crespo coming in for the Gold cup. There you have my most recent and ever changing line up. :)

Todd Utah, yes, the most common formations in competitive football lately have been 4-2-2-2 and 4-2-3-1.
Of course these are dynamic positions, so with a couple of steps by 3 players it all becomes a 3-5-2. Remember that today’s starting positions are as relative as coaches can make them.
But the “double 5″, as you say, would end up with Macherano and Gago in front of the line of 4 defenders and that, I believe would balance our team.
You can also have a “double five” in front of 3 defenders.
Lavolpe (with Mexico) very smartly, took the albicelestes by surprise at WC ‘06, by switching to 3 defenders and a double 5 in the middle of the game.
Alexa, I agree with you, Boca has consistently been one of the great teams of the world. But two comments on that,
1. They were excellent with Basile (and with Bianchi), now with Lavolpe just arrived, we’ll see.
2. When Boca play River, anything can happen, no matter how low River are these days, it’s anybody’s match.
I wish you could be there at Monumental and feel that amazing amount of energy from the fans when the teams come out to the field.
Although these type of matches are no ticket to the best football these teams are capable to play, the pressure is big and only the good players show what they’re made of.
Iguaín, Farías and Gallardo are the ones to watch in River. Ortega won’t be in the line up. As for Boca, Gago and Palacio of course. Too bad Ibarra is still injured. He’s excellent too.
Saludos

Gallardo may not start and Ortega is said to have an alcohol problem. Farias seems to have edged out Falcao to form the opposite striker to Pipita. As for Boca Ibarra and Battaglia will not be ready…so Calvo will continue and Franzioa for Battaglia.

Double number five…ooo Bianchi what a great formation u developed and mastered. I say if Basile goes (which he wants to) double 5 we are going to be bananas. I hope for 3 at the back becuz 4 maybe to offensive with the lats making constent runs and we all know are weekness. Besides Gago is a bit more offensive so he can drift into the attack much like REDONDO (love that guy) Mache is more defensive y pone huevo…as long as these two guys play side-by-side, I’m getting excited, its a great formation.

I agree with you Jason, that idea of having Mascherano and Gago together, (with Messi playing as one of the offensive midfielders) sounds mighty. Lots of room for attacking football.
